Children are the future generation of the county, and they have gained wealth. They are important in society, and this determines the form of the contribution they can produce. A culture that brings up bad children will still be heading in the wrong direction, while bringing up healthier children means a lot of good things to a country, too (Curasi 609). The theme “Why Children’s Freedom of Thought should be valued” is of utmost importance since it encourages children to participate in the decision-making process. They are also part of the families they come from and are distinguished members such that any action taken by the parents has a direct impact on the children.
There are sections of people who are in support of the idea that children should be granted the freedom to think. However, others also feel that their inputs are insignificant to the society. Therefore, allowing children the freedom to think can either be supported or opposed by people based on their reasoning. Just like any human being, children too need freedom. They also need a space to exercise their rights to think and to be heard whenever they are a decision that is being made in the family or the society. According to Ben and Asher, freedom is an essential element but needs to be controlled because it can determine the quality of children in society (Ben & Asher 574). The quality of children depends on factors such as education, culture, the type of society and its origin. Most of education systems require children to be given freedom to think simply because they are very vulnerable and delicate so should be handled with a lot of care.
Allowing children to have freedom to think is an integral part of the education. In education which emphasizes on learning, creativity is needed. Creativity can only be achieved by allowing learners to make decisions which help in knowledge advancement. Learners being children when given freedom to think on their own makes them creative and can come up with decisions that can change their lives in future. An education system which allows learners to think can be described as learners centered learning process produces graduates of high quality (Hochschild, Jennifer & Nathan 345).
Children who are given the freedom to make their decisions increases their level of understanding in class work hence resulting in the production of children of high quality (Ben & Asher 574). Similarly, a better understanding of some concepts is believed to ability possessed by an individual. Skills attached to a person is like talent which cannot be shared therefore the second party is not necessary to control the nature of human being. Lucky children in learning process have freedom to think and make a decision. Allowing children to think is not wrong, but they should be advised during the decision-making process. In contrast, children should not be given freedom to think because they can mess up and therefore teachers must provide constant guidance to the children so that to have a sound generation in the future.
Academic achievements of children also have a close relationship with the freedom of children. Children help in the determination of criteria by which their academic works are judged. Furthermore, children should be involved in deciding on the academic work they are interested (Ben & Asher 577). This kind of scenario gives kids more control over education. It helps in evaluation of learning process because children are directly involved in thinking. When involving learners in the argument particularly on science related concepts build confidence in them. Learning process requires teachers just to offer guidance but not to make decisions to learners (Hochschild, Jennifer & Nathan 346). Therefore, this confirms that “Why Children’s Freedom to think should be cherished.” However, it is frequently overlooked, children should know why they are involved in issues concerning their lives and why they are learning. Participation of learners as an aspect of education give children voice about the means of learning, and also they know what and why they are learning. In contrast, the academic achievements do not rely on the freedom of the children but controlled thinking by relevant people in the society. Therefore, the children’s freedom to think should still be guided by senior adults around them, such as their teachers, parents and elder siblings because they can always make wrong choices. Some of the choices may negatively impact on their academic achievements.
Social and behavioral issues define maturity of a person in the society. Children should not be left behind when talking about issues concerning behaviors. Intrinsically, children are social values in various places such as schools, homes, and churches. Most of the behavioral values and intellectual development are obtained from schools by children. School trains children to be responsible, to be a caring person in a society and also able to make right choices and efficiently solve problems (Ben & Asher 575). Most of the educators having thought of ways of assisting children to be active in decision making either directly or indirectly. On the social and behavioral issues, the freedom of the children should be controlled because children can easily go astray when given freedom to think and society requires well-behaved children.
Besides, an involvement of children in decision-making gives some advantages: children feel they are respected by ensuring that their opinions are clear and concise. It builds a sense of ownership to the community; it contributes to the development of children of social and cognitive skills such as conflict resolution, perspective taking and rational analysis (Curasi 610). The responsibility in education must be a point of concern for all stakeholders where children are one of them. On the same note, children are invited to legalistic thinking process about the application and adoption of enforcement that put emphasis on the punishment as a way of solving problems or correct mistakes (Ben & Asher 579). Moreover, when comes to choosing leaders in schools, children should be given freedom to choose their leaders. Democracy should be allowed to be used by children to give them a sense of their liberty in the society. In most of the constitutions, leaders are chosen through voting, and the candidates with highest would automatically become a leader. Consequently, children should be allowed to participate in a voting process to exercise their democratic rights as well practicing freedom in the society.
Children should not be restricted from thinking. Cases of allowing children to decide are the rhetoric of philosophers, and it is not easy to relate it to the real actions of the world. Some scholars have argued on the topic: ”Why Children’s Freedom to think should be cherished,” and they claim that children can misuse their freedom to violate their personal rights (Hochschild, Jennifer & Nathan 347). Meanwhile, the society should develop concerns to necessitate placement of constraints on some of the decisions made by children. There could be a need to restrict the choices made by children; however, there is no consensus on how to carry it out. The raising of restrictions may seem to be easy on the ideal platform but has poor implementation because controlling decisions made by different individuals is not an easy task.
There situations in the life of human beings that require the urgent making of the decision and deep critical thinking. The thinking capacity of children is a bit small but can be helpful when they do not have anyone else to rely on. Irrespective of their low memory, children can still do a critical thinking when in critical situations. For instance, when left in the house and an accident like fire breakout occurs. A child with the ability to think will always find a way of rescuing him/herself, but when they were not given the opportunity to think, they may fail to realize the danger and end up endangering their lives. Restriction on the freedom of children in decision making cannot be avoided in modern society. However, these young people should be encouraged to do many active works in groups where they can share ideas and improve their thinking capacity. It is at this tender age that they can start training themselves to be good debaters, good leaders, and even to overcome crowd fear that has been a problem for many people. Many questions have been raised on the topic, ”Why Children’s Freedom to think should be cherished” and it looks like it is a way of letting their brains to develop for them to grow up as active adults.
Children may not be given a chance to make final decisions, but they should always be challenged to contribute to matters affecting their families. Additionally, while at school, they should be encouraged to form study groups under the guidance of their teachers and interact with one another. Studies show that quality of a child’s education would be good when he/she is given the freedom to make some decisions (Curasi 612). A learning process is a part and parcel to the thinking ability of children. A society that gives freedom to children to make decisions are said to children of high quality regarding academic achievements.
In summary, the social and behavioral values of children show the maturity of future society. Schools are believed to the principal source of intellectual development. The freedom of children thinking creates confidence resulting to better social and behavioral values. Giving children the freedom to make a decision has various advantages to them and the society as a whole. For, instance they always feel respected and appreciated in the community. However, some children’s freedom to think can sometimes lead them to trouble when under no guidance. Giving children the freedom to think makes them develop their mental ability and can get them become imperative thinkers. Therefore, children might just need advice when it comes to making final decisions but their freedom to think should not be taken away from them. All the ideas in this article have given all the necessary reasons to support the topic: ”Why Children’s Freedom to think should be cherished.”
