The film depicts in great detail the customs and traditions that govern leadership positions in China. Hua Yueh encounters a lot of hostility at the Dragon Gate Inn, where she was supposed to meet Smiling Tiger Tsu Kan; Lee Wan-Chung. The intermediary scenes at the Dragon Gate Inn show that the Chinese men saw Pei-pei Cheng as a weakling. The latter depicts the Chinese custom of dismissing women as incapable of defending themselves. The Smiling Tiger Tsu Kan makes the statement that Pei-pei Cheng would not leave the Dragon gate Inn alive having the thought in mind that she was a weak feminine.
The setting of the movie is in the late 90’s when technology wasn’t that advanced. However, I was quite moved by the arrangement and scene combination as it came out precisely and perfectly. The switching of scenes was captivating and smooth; the casts quickly switch scenes, and there were no delays in doing so. It was easy for the eye to dominate in the middle of the screen where the scenes were concentrated.
The costumes used in the movie are quite fit for the film situation. It is easy for the casts to fight in their costumes. The costumes are Pien-fu worn at ceremonial events by both men and women. Pien-fu has two pieces; a skirt reaching the ankle and a tunic-like top that flows down towards the knee. The quality of the movie and the audio is not the best owing to the fact that the film was acted in the late 90’s. Evidently, at some point, the actions by the actors are faster compared to the camera motion-sensor speed. The camera angle positioning was miscalculated as the scene was at some point not clear in the midst of actions. The tracking shot of the camera makes the casts to be followed easily in the middle of the foreplay. The lighting effect was low key with a high contrast effect.
The organization of the objects within the frame of the scene is captivating. The observer’s eye is concentrated in the objects within the scope of the camera frame. The camera frame works to link the scenes and the objects within it. The linking creates a powerful interplay of the relation between the objects and the scene. The form of the scene is closed, giving the scenes a loose framing making it easy for the characters to move around. The loose framing ensures that the casts are not restricted to the place they are, owing to the fact that the movie is action-oriented.
The foreground of the movie is deep with a shallow middle and background. This serves to make the movie easy to watch in theaters as the field depth favors screenplay.
The character placement in the scene is fair. The characters are equipped with the complete casting of the scenes, so they have no difficulties shifting from one scene to the other. The character positioning is perfect for the foreplay of the movie. The positioning makes it even easier for the camera angle to capture the whole scene being cast. The organization of the character space allows for useful effect shifting and movement of characters to create action moments and scene interplay.
