The world of sport and Problems Encountered By Elite Athletes

268 views 2 pages ~ 400 words Print

The world of sport has undergone numerous changes throughout history and most recently; one notable example of these changes is the athletes’ constant and persistent migration from their native countries to other nations. (Darby et al. 2007). It is also important to note that, despite how great or profitable this trend may appear, there have been a few issues with it. The media has reported on the difficulties faced by athletes who relocated to other regions of the globe to pursue their careers.

The issue of racial discrimination is one of the main issues this set of altheas is dealing with. It is a pity that in some parts of European racial discrimination is still of the problem. In recent times the problem has been associated with African athletes who practice their profession in Europe. The world for football was shocked with an excellent example of this incident when there was a racial chant against a player by the name of Kelvin-prince boating. The African soccer star played for AC Milan at that time. Other problems faced by this group player include the possibility if wage discrimination and excessive taxation. In countries like England for instance, athletes of foreign nationality pay more in taxes compared to Britons. (Berry, 2002).

There is need also to note that language barrier is usually another problem faced by this group of athletes. (Darby et al. 2007). In conclusion, there is need also to mention the primary problem associated with athletes who choose to switch national allegiance to represent another nation in international competitions. This group of players usually faces discrimination, and most often they fall down the pecking order as more preference is given to athletes who primarily originate from the country, Ghosh, 2014).
