Cult Soviet action film The White Sun of the Desert

The White Sun of the Desert was produced in the East. An Indian movie with Kadiri Venkata Reddy as the director and B. Nagi Reddy and Ali Chakrapani as the producers (Fedorov, 2015). Its initial broadcast took place on March 27, 1957. The film was also made in Tamil and Telugu with distinct casts.

The plot is an adaptation of the legendary Mahabharata-based folktale Sasirekha Parinayam

In an effort to reconcile Abhimanyu with his lover, who also happens to be Balarama’s daughter, and Arjuna’s son, Krishna and Ghatotkacha (Savitri). The portrayal of Krishna in the play received acclaim, and it yielded more offers to reprise a similar role in the different unrelated film. However, Rama Rao was initially reluctant to play the part. Both in Telugu and Tamil cinemas, the film were considered a landmark with praise from its cast and the technical accomplishment regardless of the technological limitations during that particular time (Fedorov, 2015). The setting of the movie is done on the east shore of the Caspian Sea desert that is today known as Turkmenistan. The continuous crisp shot of the white and clear blue sky makes it particularly unique visual style. Much of it is also done in a kind of settlement that is neither a village nor a town, but an impressive architecture of the desert that seemed as though it rise from the sands.

The plot of the film

The plot is about a soldier of the Red Army, Sukhov, who has been fighting in the Russian Civil War from many years. According to Gornostaeva (2012), Sukhov has always had the aim to bring communism to the region, and he gained the respect of the army through different brave actions. He is chosen to be the guard ad protect the harem of the guerrilla leader known as Abdulla when he is about to return home to his wife after being hospitalized and demobbed. Abdulla is the most wanted by the Red Army and because women hindered him, his nine wives, he is left in Harem. It was expected of him to escort these women to a village where they would get assistance after waiting. This was, however, the most dangerous and arduous diversions. Along the way, he, however, met other colorful characters along the way, all of whom had a mission to fulfill. Sayid was a bandit who wanted to revenge his father, Petrukha was a young soldier who had a soft heart, and Vereshchagin was a customs official in the village. Sukhov is worried about whether or not he will make it out of the whole thing alive and go home to his wife or he will be ultimately outnumbered by the many bandits and is little hope for the campaign.

Significance of the movie to Russians

The movie is of significance to Russians since it carries a lot of cultural similarities with the Russian culture. It is done simply with a focus on the right guys versus the bad guys where the determined soldiers had to work as hard protect their land from the always occurring g bandits (Gornostaeva, 2012). The setting is done during that time of civil war where the revolution of 1917 followed. For many generations of viewers, it became the most favorite pictures. The movie is realistic because of people’s reaction and e arising situations when the villain Abdallah attacks cold-bloodedly. The movie is a perfect combination of both dramatic moves and real action, alongside great humor (Siefert, 2016). I consider it a bit more western because of the soundtrack which is most likely to be appealing to the Russian audience and those who speak fluent Russian and the audience of the West will have no problem understanding the concept.

The White Sun of the Desert as an excellent film

The White Sun of the Desert is an excellent film that is excellently done. It has aged so well, and it carried reasonable traces of the Soviet Propaganda and had outdone the western films even though it borrowed most of the common themes from the western counterparts. I consider it an action/adventure film, and it takes more of a western scene in Turkmenistan. It is a highly recommendable film hat is still managing to be thought-provoking and fruitful in avoiding being just a silly entertainment cast but rather becomes a real classical cinema.

The legacy of the film

The film creators earned the Russian Federation State Prize in Literature arts award in the year 1997, and he was about three decades after release and cast of the movie, and it had left the silver screen (Gillespie, 2014). Based on the film, a Russian computer game was released. The writer was given an opportunity to be the symbol of a customs officer and monuments honoring him were erected in Amvrosiikva in 2001 and Kurgan in 2007, in Moscow in the year 2008 and Luhansk in the year 2011 (Gillespie, 2014). All members that took part in the movie boarded space flights and were committed to watching the White Sun of The Desert, and the nine wives of Abdallah were assigned several creates on the Venus (Gornostaeva, 2012). This is part of the legacy left behind by the movie.
