The Theme of Humanity and Corporation in Soylent Green

Movies as a Warning

Movies have been used in many instances to give a warning to the people especially by portraying particular themes with the warning. Soylent Green is an epitome of such movies covering the theme of humanity and corporation which are relevant themes even to this current generation. The movie covers humanity issues such as global warming, overpopulation, food shortage as well water shortages. Such issues have been brought majorly by the climate changes which are caused by irresponsible human activities. Therefore, the paper explores the theme of humanity and corporation as depicted in the movie.

The Soylent Corporation and Government Corruption

The Soylent Corporation represents the government who are actively involved in corruption. They are seeing manufacturing what they refer as Soylent green but are cheap crackers containing chemicals and vegetable matter from humans, then supplying them to consumers, depicting an act of cannibalism which is against humanity. The government also is ignorant in containing the number of murders and supplying water to residents which shows that humanity is the least of their concern. Any attempts to go against the government can lead to murder as seen in the case of Joseph Cotton who was a straightforward member of the Soylent corporation board of directors.

Discrimination and Degrading Women

Conversely, the movie portrays acts against humanity especially in handling women. Women are victims of discrimination same as what is seen is some societies in the present world although most of the societies are beyond the virtue. An example is the two main female characters in the film, whose identifying feature is their status in regards to men they associate with. The film clearly portrays men being of a stronger character than women. Women like the environment are degradable and replaceable and environmental degradation could lead to female degradation in the current world if anything is not done about the issue.

Responsibility in Protecting the Environment

In conclusion, based on the impact of climate change to the humanity, people should be responsible on how they take care of the environment. For instance, the government should play a critical role in ensuring that the environment is protected against any form of pollution to avoid the negative impact of climate change.
