The Role of the Joint Commission in Nursing

The two significant organizations to nursing are the Joint Commission and the World Health Organization. The Joint Commission is a non-profit organization in the US that operates independently. Its key role is to administer accreditation programs among hospital providers and other healthcare facilities on a voluntary basis (The Joint Commission, 2018). The commission is important in nursing education and practice as it sets performance standards which address the elements of nursing operation including patient care, safety, nurses and patient rights, and infection control. As such, it sets the objectives and goals for nursing education which ensures that nurses are equipped with proper caring and nurturing skills and abilities (Olans, Nicholas, Hanley, & DeMaria, 2015). The commission also engages in research to identify the root causes as well as improvements and risk reduction programs that can enhance patient care. Thus, the commission acts as a resource for health care system as it offers the required standards that enhances patient safety.

The Role of the World Health Organization in Nursing

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a United Nations body which directs and coordinates health. It key role is to enhance public health in the international arena as well as engage in the formulation of health policies that can promote health and safety. WHO plays a key role in the nursing practice and education by coordinating the formulation of standards and norms of nursing practice as well as the ethical and evidence-based options necessary for patient care (World Health Organization, 2015). The organization also monitors international health situations and assesses health trends to ensure that the existing policies address all emerging health issues. This directly impacts nursing practices as nurses adhere to such standards in providing care (World Health Organization, 2015). In the nursing research, the organization shapes the research agenda and stimulates the creation, translations and dissemination of key health information across different healthcare providers and users. Thus, the organization is considered a Resource for Healthcare System.
