Founded in 1950, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is the governing body of the Nigerian football association. It aims to promote the development and professionalism of football in the country. It also organises a number of tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the Nigeria Cup (NFC). In addition, it organises youth training camps and camps for professional coaches. It has also set up the National Football School, in Abuja.
AFCON 2019
AFCON 2019 is a sports competition scheduled to begin on 21 June and end on 19 July in Egypt. It is a 32nd edition of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It will be hosted by Egypt. It will see 24 teams competing in the tournament. The top two teams will advance to the knockout stages.
Nigeria qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1963, in Ghana. They finished on six points, and qualified as the second best team in the group. They are one of the favourites to win the tournament. They defeated Burundi 1-0 in their first match and drew with South Africa 2-0 in their second match. They defeated defending champions Cameroon in the round-of-16.
Nigeria will face Senegal in their last group game on June 17. The Super Eagles have already arrived in Ismailia, Egypt. The backroom staff will arrive on Sunday. They will also travel to the Egyptian city of Alexandria on June 14. They will play Madagascar and Guinea on June 17.
The 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be staged in three venues: Cairo, Suez, Ismailia.
AFCON 2002
AFCON 2002 for the Nigerian football federation was a disappointing event. The team’s star power was expected to be on display. But the Super Eagles’ efforts in Mali were drab and unspectacular. They scored one goal in a competition that saw them face off against Ghana, Algeria, and Senegal.
Senegal were a physical force to be reckoned with, and a few nifty moves helped them achieve their aims. However, they were hampered by an inferior goalkeeping performance from Ike Shorunmu. The Super Eagles did have an extra man in the second half, but they could not do much to find a winner.
Senegal were no slouches, and they started the match with an impressive runaround. They fashioned a few half chances, but Nigeria’s back line was exposed to their attacks.
The Senegal defenders were in no mood to give up. Pape Sarr was sent off for a tackle on Nigeria’s Garba Lawal. Diouf won the ball, but his pass beyond Shorunmu was no more than a speculative effort. Eventually, Senegal were awarded a penalty, which they duly converted.
AFCON 2006
AFCON 2006, Nigeria’s first AFCON since 1994, was a disappointment. They lost to Uganda in the semi-final, and then finished third in the group. In addition, Gernot Rohr, Nigeria’s long-time coach, was fired after the tournament. He was replaced by Augustine Eguavoen.
The Nigerian federation has too many egos. The powers that be must develop a strong coaching staff and stadium management. They should also develop a game plan for the team. This is what Eguavoen has done with the Super Eagles. In the last group game against Senegal, he showed tactical nous.
Eguavoen is confident that Nigeria can win the AFCON in Mexico next year. In his first year, he managed the Super Eagles to finish third at the Africa Cup of Nations.
He has a strong group of players, including a number of players who are born after the glory days of Nigeria’s 1994 World Cup team. He has to find a way to get them to win games.
