It is obvious that the new millennium has brought about a fresh wave of intolerance, insensitivity, and extreme levels of discernment that has consumed students and other stakeholders of many educational institutions, with other social systems like churches, political parties, and social gatherings being no exception. These injustices have prompted lobby organizations, individuals, and governments to work toward and implement solutions that will allow people of all races, colors, and religious beliefs to live in peace with one another. Similar to these groups, I made the decision to lead the fight against vices and launch an online awareness campaign because I firmly believe in diversity, respect individual differences, and recognize the marginalized groups in our society. Social, ethnic and racial orientations will always differ across the globe and recognizing these differences and creating awareness undoubtedly plays a significant role in enhancing tolerance. Besides running an online campaign, I also run a blog that has helped me identify and appreciate different cultural, racial and even religious orientations that must be respected by all persons so as to create an environment of peacefully coexistence.
Diverse belief systems have always been different and unless people are taught to appreciate these diversities as a normal societal gist, vices such as discrimination, intolerance and biasness will never be curtailed. I created my blog so as to dismiss the typecast that some races, genders and religious orientations are superior and I take pride in having mobilized students in my school through my blog by making known to the school authorities of a student who had published very intimidating and spiteful remarks targeting students of a particular religion and color. These remarks were a huge threat to peaceful coexistence at my school if they were not addressed promptly. The student was eventually expelled from school for violating one of the school’s rules. This experience has been one of my most gratifying and satisfying experience in my college days since I personally helped in achieving peaceful coexistence among ourselves. Human beings cannot subsist in seclusion, each and every person is important to the other. In order to live in coherence, however, tolerance is a very significant virtue and this is the seed that I am struggling to sow. I hope that my efforts will bear fruits and that I will be that glimmer of light that shines so that the future generation can be devoid of any form of discrimination.
