John Goodlad thinks that education is a crucial tool for growing a democratic society and a person. Additionally, education is essential for fostering a sense of democratic accountability and collective intelligence in society. The four educational goals that Goodlad promotes can be achieved through social studies instruction. Political science, economics, history, geography, psychology, and anthropology are all included in social studies education. Students may decide wisely regarding civic issues that affect their families, government, and the entire world with this understanding (Goodlad, 2008). Goodland maintains that education contributes to the development of a free and democratic society in which everyone is informed of their rights and obligations. Thus, through learning disciplines such as political science, one can know about their rights and duties towards achieving democracy.

Furthermore, Goodlad claims that education is aimed at making an individual better to realize their dreams. This is because education helps a person make wise decisions that help improve their living conditions. Social studies education helps one acquire skills and moral values that help them become integrated, self-disciplined and self-reliant citizens. Also, Goodlad argues that the goal of education is to solve the social needs that are prevalent in the society. Social studies education can help address social, economic, religious and cultural problems that exist in the society. Moreover, Goodlad claimed that education aims to create accountability in the society. He insisted that most of the social injustices and problems in the society are caused by lack of accountability in the society (Goodlad, 2008). Thus, individuals need the education to be able to record their profits and losses in the ledger books resulting in accountability. Social studies education promotes a sense of social responsibility where each is compelled to promote social equality through accountability in their respective activities. Therefore, it is evident that social studies education can meet the four goals of education that are advocated by Goodlad.
