The interviewee, a 46-year-old man, has spent the last six years working as a medical director for a sizable healthcare system in the United States. He indicated that his role as a medical director included implementing a successful healthcare program which ensured that all the other employees followed for the organization to function as required. The interviewee further provided that as a director, his major role was related to fairness, professionalism, medical teaching, and institutional development. He further provided that as a medical director, he had the obligation of remaining a servant to the constitution of the institution as well as to the provisions of the job description. Also, the interviewee indicated that his role involved ensuring an improvement of the healthcare system.
The medical director provided that professionalism is a must-have feature for any organizational leader. According to him, professionalism outlines the important aspects which are necessary to achieving a healthy work environment in the context of the healthcare practice. Professionalism acts as a guide which enhances the patient outcome within the workplace. Professional responsibility influences the medical director’s work (Olans, Olans & DeMaria Jr., 2016). Apparently, the professional responsibility guides an individual towards a path where they can behave in a competent and skillful manner are required by their profession (Nanda, 2015). The interviewee indicated that professional responsibility drove him towards behaving skillfully and ethically to ensure that he upholds all the values required by the medical profession. Apparently, the professional responsibility dictates the interviewee’s belief and behavior.
The interviewed medical director considered himself as a steward of healthcare. Evidently, he undertook all his roles seriously such as implementing the right policies and procedures within the healthcare organization to ensure that a successful healthcare program is established. Additionally, the director always handled issues related to fairness and professionalism including those of patient satisfaction and quality of care by putting improvement strategies in place to ensure a successful outcome.
The interviewee acknowledged that it is vital for leaders to exercise professional advocacy, authenticity and power when working with colleagues. The presented derivative is as a result of the fact that leaders have a great influence over the followers, therefore exercising advocacy, authenticity and power will leave the subordinates with no option but to behave in a professional and ethical manner as directed by the leaders.
There exist various similarities in the findings generated from interview 1 and 2. For instance, the interviewees in both cases agree that maintaining an ethical behavior as required by an individual’s roles and responsibility is important. Additionally, both interviewees agree that leaders should always act as role models when it comes to behaving ethically. Also, both agreed that subordinates will always behave in a professional way whenever the leaders maintain professionalism.
