Women in Society

Women were once thought to be a dormant element of the human race, but they have increasingly become active participants in all aspects of life. Since then, women have grown in importance in society and have gradually influenced social development. In contrast to previous times, modern society has recognized diverse individual identities of women. As a result, they have been regarded to have the same aims and qualities as men. This has provided girls with equal chances as men, allowing them to express themselves and make their own choices. Another role of women in the society is to engage in social activities which promote greater output in the society. Young women with proper education can be engaged in different professions of their choice. In some societies, women allocated more responsibilities. This suggests that they are capable of doing more intelligent things in contrast of being seen as ornamental.

Roles of Women in Society

Suwondo (1981) analyzed various roles of women in the society. In her journal, women are seen to have more responsibilities as compared to men. They have equal positions to subject them to work but different cultures in the society have suppressed them to stay home and to do the house chores taking care of the young ones. Women also have various abilities to do various kinds of jobs in different professions. Suwondo (1981) states that women are are capable of taking different assignments just as men and that no job is impossible for a woman. In the study, some occupations will have more effect if performed by women since they are more attributable to womanhood. Greenstein (1988) suggested that women will work hand in hand to ensure that their voices are heard and included in decision making.

Women’s Role as Mothers and Home Managers

Further study indicated that women are expected to be always there for their husbands and to stand with them as beloved wives in order to build teamwork and to establish happy families. On the other hand, women as mothers are expected to supervise and educate young people and acquaint them with spiritual nourishment and physical strength to enable them overcome today’s challenges. Women also have another managerial role in their homes to make it comfortable and habitable for every member of the family. Further, as a member in the societal organization, women give some form of energy for social life. Women should therefore strike balance between different duties of being mothers and career women.

The Family and Women’s Roles

The main role above all responsibilities is to establish and nature the family. She has duties of both being a mother and a home manager and it is upon her to stand with her family as part of the society. The main goal of this role is to make a harmonious and peaceful family in social life. In addition, women in the houses have prominent and important roles more so in guiding and bringing up of their children, Bass Avolio BJ(1994).

Women as Leaders

Jean Lau Chin (2007) studied about the role of women in the society and portrayed them as leaders. In his journal on “women and leadership”, leadership is described as a form dominance enhanced by ones ability to bring people together and perform a specific task. Leadership skills are key in determining the role of a woman in the society. It should therefore be guided by the various principles of management in the society. The expectation of a leader is to provide a better outcome and achieve the set goals and achievements. Subordinates and other people within and outside will only recognize women leadership if the set goals and objectives are achieved. Having a career provides a woman a strong will and to be more dedicated to her work. Thus, women should be encouraged more to elaborate their ambitions and confidence to lead.

Women’s Leadership in Society

In a study by Brines J, (1994) which modeled economic dependency and gender, the role of women and motherhood has been spearheaded. Women leadership eventually brings potential and very key positions in the social cultural, economic and political development of the nation. The only way to develop woman leadership is by ensuring that woman is as well educated as man. Eventually, the leadership of women will as well function as that of a man which will enable the woman participate in the country’s development. In the long run, women’s positions and their leadership skills will be equal as those of men and thus gender segregation will be a thing of the past.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the role of women in the society can be seen and felt in various broad ways. Besides ambitions and skills, women leadership reach beyond men because of their ability of being tough in decision making processes which is a required characteristic of a leader. Women’s role in the society is not only to have a career but also have a responsibility in her house. Women in the society also engage in various social activities which are seen to promote greater output in the society. Women who are educated can be engaged in different professions of their choice. Women are allocated more responsibilities in some societies which implies that that they are capable of doing more intelligent things in contrast of being seen as ornamental. Women should also distinguish between duties of being career women and mothers. The main role above all responsibilities is to establish and nature the family. She has duties of both being a mother and a home manager and it is upon her to stand with her family as part of the society.
