The Importance of Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing

Evidence-based practice is the integration of clinical expertise, patient values and the best research evidence into the making decision for patient care. Nurses usually play a critical role in ensuring the practice is implemented in most health centers. Naturally, most of the nurses are leaders, and they are in a better position to coordinate and ensure the continuity of effective patient care across the healthcare systems. Additionally, they are in a position to reduce problems associated with medication by managing efforts at the system and patient level. They also ensure communication occurs among the necessary stakeholders and that medical reviews are done comprehensively to identify issues that require immediate actions (Melnyk& Fineout-Overholt, 2011).

The first step in implementing the practice would be to plan a course of action, then involve, engage and communicate to the appropriate stakeholders on how to use the intervention. Eventually, the plan should be executed and implemented as earlier planned.

Several problems that have led to the transformation of healthcare culture include; the rise of open collaboration and communication, the projected future leadership in healthcare, lack of new talents, and a shortage of skilled health information and technology professionals among others(Hamer & Collinson, 2014).

How organizational infrastructure and culture affects implementation of nursing evidence-based practices.

The flexibility of an organizational infrastructure determines the implementation of evidence-based practice because there are chances that staff will adapt quickly to the proposed changes. Also, the stability of an organization’s culture might favor implementation of such an intervention. Among other factors that may promote or hinder the implementation of this practice in an organization include cultural alignment, process implementation, and goal unification.

Several steps of implementing evidence-based practice include; asking clinical guiding questions, searching for the best evidence, appraising the evidence critically, integrating the evidence with the clinical expertise, evaluating the outcomes of the practice and finally disseminating the income
