Healthcare informatics is defined as a specialization that merges information, computer, and nursing science to transmit and manage knowledge, data, wisdom, and information within the areas of nursing practice. The function of informatics is gradually becoming one of the most visible aspects of our profession today, and it is always evolving as new technologies emerge (Kelley et.al, 2011).

Privacy and Security of Patient Data

Many healthcare systems have been incorporating new technologies to ensure that nursing practice is continually moving at a rapid speed to create an efficient health care system. Privacy and security of the patient data are one of the issues that have been troubling the nursing practice for many years (Nielsen et.al, 2013). The patient information data storage by the nursing administration is a crucial attribute of the nursing practice. It is in line with accomplishing the goal of ensuring that the transformation of data into knowledge is done without any compromising situations. Therefore, for this purpose suitable evidence-based practice using relevant informatics technologies would be able to improve the care provided to the patients and also allow for the privacy and security of their data.

Nursing Informatics and Health Care Delivery

Nursing informatics can integrate useful information technologies with the various nursing sciences to ensure improved methods when it comes to the documentation and health care delivery of the patients (Bakken, 2001). One of the goals of using a real medical informatics technology is to ensure accuracy and privacy of information for every patient. With a good security system, the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system is a good informatics technology that can be used for documentation of every patient data and plays an important part in the comprehensive patient care. This system would be the perfect solution to the security and privacy of the health information of a patient. This system would be an excellent addition to the nursing practice and would serve to build trust between the health workers and patients in that their information is both private and secure, while also realizing the numerous potential benefits that are provided by the electronic exchange of health information.

Management of Nursing Data

Nursing data is a crucial part of the patient health care and any data about the patient that is recorded and documented needs to be managed in a secure location and place. The EHR has a very comprehensive security system integrated into it and would not allow any unregistered or unauthorized persons to access information from the system without the name and password. The name and password are ideal for the authentication of the nurse. It is the most important component of the protection of patient information. The login details are provided by the administrator who issues all the nurses the proper login details.

Security Principles for EHR Implementation

It is significant to consider the different aspects of the hospital information and system design when it comes to the users and the stakeholders who are responsible for the use of the EHR system. They all have different requirements which may pose a challenge to the policy makers when they are planning for the implementation of the EHR system. Therefore, there is a need to have the appropriate security decisions so as to realize the required level of protection when it comes to the electronic data provided by the nurses. It is important to get necessary information from different specialists before the implementation of the system on the security principles and attributes of the system.
