In order to honor Benjamin Braddock following his graduation from Williams College, a movie called The Graduate was created in 1967. The Graduate (the movie) demonstrated exceptional qualities that are highly pertinent to the cinematographer’s goals. The celebratory movie shows how the filmmaker skillfully and exhaustively presented many scenarios that give the movie a purpose. The Graduate (Moviesignificant )’s characteristics that reveal its cinematographic goals include realism, classicism, formalism, the shots, the angles, high or low key, symbols or colors, and lighting. This essay examines key characteristics of a cinematographer who contributed to the graduate film to demonstrate his or her aims. The art of realism is depicted in ‘The Graduate (Movie)’ when Benjamin’s parents and the neighbors delivered accolades and asked him about his plans. Everybody was happy with Benjamin showing that he had achieved a true quality for his life. Realism is also shown when Elaine, Benjamin’s girlfriend was about to wed with Carl. At this juncture, Benjamin is seen making noise with Elaine’s name that made her run away to escape with him. The director intended to set a reality that there was a true love that existed between Elaine and Benjamin. Benjamin expressed the literature of classism when he felt uncomfortable with the questions that the neighbors were asking him. The graduate seemed to believe on the traditional conditions but had to recognize his new life standards. The director of the film also shown how Benjamin mistreated Elaine showing that he still had a feeling about her mother, Mrs. Robinson. In ‘The Graduate’ movie, cinematographer presented formalism Mrs. Robinson had to excessively adhere with the prescribed forms of Elaine getting married to Benjamin, her ex-boyfriend.

The Graduate (Movie) is made up of several shots to envision what the writer of the movie intended to communicate. The cinematographer made some quick, short, long, stationary and swept shots to compose the whole scene. A stationary shot is shown when Benjamin felt uncomfortable with the questions that the neighbors were asking him. Benjamin stood motionless with a stone face looking at the people celebrating. The director of the film used short and quick shots to show the point when Mrs. Robinson invited Benjamin in her house to seduce him. Long shots are used to show the point where Benjamin stood while making noise with the name of Elaine on her wedding day. The director also used a full shot to show how Benjamin and his girlfriend eloped.

The director of The Graduate (Movie) has used both high and low angles depict the different position of the subjects. Great angles are used to show the points when Benjamin was moving to Elaine’s house and how he indulged in celebration with the entire family and neighbors. A high angle shot is also taken when Benjamin was looking at how his girlfriend, Elaine was a wedding with Carl, a man whom Robinson recommended. Short angles were used by the director to show how strong and powerful the subjects in the movie were. For instance, the director used a low angle to show how Benjamin behaved when he saw Elaine being married. It is also used to depict how Elaine responded to the noise that Benjamin made with her name. The short angle shots used produced a large scene where the viewer could easily guess the mood of the subjects. The low and high angles were enabled by both the high keys and low keys.

Different lighting systems have enabled the colors of the scene in ‘The Graduate’ movie. The various light colors are also allowed by subtle lighting and high-key lightings. Low keys and keys provided several photographic variables that added aesthetic value. For instance, the producer of the graduate film used high-key to provide brighter pictures of Benjamin during his graduation celebration. The wedding scene of Elaine and scene was focused by a high-key to show that the ceremony is taking place during the day. The director of the movie also used a low-key to show the picture of Benjamin making love with Elaine. The low-key provided a dark light showing that the event was taking place at night. The quality of lighting used in the graduate movie also perceived softness and hardness. The hard quality provided shadows with sharp edges of Mrs. Robinson arguing with Benjamin about the wedding of Elaine. Soft quality also was used to demonstrate the point when Benjamin was making love to his girlfriend, producing lighter and diffused shadows.

The colors used in the graduate movie is manipulated through lighting. The director tinted the various scenes to depict the location, time and emotions of the subjects. The cinematographer used warm color to depict how Benjamin expressed his romance to Elaine, his girlfriend. The photographer has also used bright colors to show daytime and dull colors to indicate night time. The director also used contrasting colors to convey the tension that occurred between Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson.
