Lack of funds, outmoded technology, and hostility from homosexual activists, members of the medical establishment, and politicians all hampered the early war against AIDS. The CDC was also unwilling to confirm AIDS transmission through blood, and the struggle between American and French scientists, primarily Dr. Robert Gallo, over who should be credited with discovering the virus resulted in the infection’s ongoing expansion and increased mortality.
I do not believe the AIDS pandemic could have been avoided due of the lifestyle choices and lack of understanding of the disease. The flow of information was also limited, and culture and beliefs further fuelled the spread of the disease hence managing the spread was difficult and considering the stigma associated with the diseases, victims were unwilling to come out for help.
Advocacy in the film played an important role in spreading information on the disease and how it is transmitted, improve access to finances for research, how the gay community advocated for increases research and the role community and public health can achieve better health. Advocacy is clearly evidence by Don Francis and the CDC. HIV receives a lot of publicity today, and many people have understood the disease and preventive and treatment measures being taken.
AIDS in the 21st century is one of progression with many people being infected and deaths rising as families, communities, and economies are ruined. The disease has causes behavior changes in response including delaying first sexual experience, use of condoms, testing, and reduced number of sexual partners.
Discussion 2
Occupation and culture influence psychosocial stressors that affect middle-aged stressors by imposing certain expectations on the individuals. Those of lower rank in occupations are more stressed as they feel they feel they have not achieved their goal while culture affects behavior in different regions as evidenced by high mid-life stress in America and low in Japan and India. The culture affects behavior and outlook on life hence the mid-life stress.
My occupation positively influences psychosocial stress by imparting skills and understanding that promote how to solve issues. The skills help understand and overcome challenges that could increase the severity of psychosocial stress.
