The Effects of GMO foods on the Human Body

199 views 2 pages ~ 539 words Print

For many years, scientists have debated the impact of genetically engineered foods on the human body. GMOs are foods that have been genetically modified to increase yields, hardiness, and herbicide resistance. Despite concerns about their efficacy, these foods have been on the market for many years, and researchers are continuing to develop more.

Since little is understood about their effectiveness, many users avoid them. Manufacturers have avoided mentioning health issues around the use of these foods because they believe it would harm their industry. Apart from scientists and dieticians, religious leaders, as well as cultural communities, have been criticizing these types of foods because they feel it is unnatural mechanism of producing food.

Most people have also shown concerns regarding the issue of transferring animal genes into plants and vice versa. Experts are also of the sentiments that with the continuous growth in production of such foods, the developing countries may end up relying on the industrial nations because it seems food production will be controlled by them in the future.

For a couple of some years, the world health organization (WHO) has been showing concerns on the safety of genetically modified foods through working with scientists who have been justifying the nutritional contents of GMOs. The WHO and other stakeholders have been arguing that a lot of research should be done to identify the safety of these kinds of foods.

Although the world health organization, scientists, and dietitians have shown concerns regarding the use of GMOs for human consumption, there is still a variety of species of GMOs market and others are expected to be invented in the future. Some of the available foods in the market include; potatoes, canola, soybeans, eggplants, tomatoes, among others.

Regardless of potential health issues, more genetically modified foods appear each year. In 2011, the USDA approved the planting of genetically beets and alfalfa for livestock. Although many people have been criticizing this study, the available scientific research shows that the potential negative effects of GMOs are not so different from those created by the conventional breeding practices for animals, plants, or the microbial advancements and are already familiar to toxicologists.

Genetically modified foods have been existence for many years and research regarding their long-term impacts on human beings is scarce. Most of the studies undertaken have been leading to mixed reactions concerning how fit there are on human beings. Some people argue based on how risky these kinds of food on human beings while others say there is nothing to prove how dangerous they are.

Over the years, researchers have been conducting studies on animals to determine the impacts of these foods on living things. Surprisingly, the findings from researches conducted on animals link the genetically modified foods to inflammation, altered metabolism, liver and kidney problems and fertility problems.

Most dieticians and scientists who criticize the use of GMO for human consumption base their arguments on various impacts like toxicity, infertility, gluten disorders among others. They also state that the use of GMO foods can lead to diseases which are immune to antibiotics. Besides, because these kinds of foods are new inventions to human consumption, a lot of research needs to be done to establish their effects on long-term effects on human beings.
