Assessing Child Development

Assessing the development of a child during the early years of life is very significant to ensure proper growth and development. The development of a child is unique to each and two babies can never grow similarly. During the first stage of development, the infant is uncertain about the world in which they live in (McLeod, 2007). The ones supposed to provide and ensure the safety of their children are the parents. When infants develop, they usually have a feeling of uncertainty, and it is the responsibility of the parents to resolve this feeling. The infant looks up to their caregivers for safety and to provide stability and care. The infant will be able to develop trust and other stable relationship with others when they grow up. When infants develop a sense of confidence, they will have hope that the caregiver will give them support in case of crises. If a child experiences harsh care, the child will be able to develop mistrust and not trust the world around them.

Concerns about Maya’s Development

In the beginning, I was concerned that Maya was losing a lot of weight and her eating habits were not that stable. During the first few weeks, Maya lost weight when I made a comparison to the typical babies. Adjusting to regular feeding was a challenge making her develop stomach upset. The first step I had to take was to create an allergy test for the new food that I was to introduce to her. Testing her for allergies was a very crucial step to establish a stable food program (Feldman & Landry, 2013). Despite the fact that her eating development is slower than that of healthy children, there is a significant improvement. Her sleeping pattern is quite typical to that of children her age. Since she is getting older, having a sleeping partner will help improve her development. When it comes to her developmental pattern and motor skills she enjoys crawling, pulling up to stand and sitting. Maya’s general development is standard as that of typical kids.

Impact of Environment on Development

The environment that a child grows in dramatically affects their development. The situation at home and the relationship with your neighbors jeopardize your child’s behavior. Our house is usually overcrowded and too loud, this has affected the time I spend with Maya, making her feel neglected. Maya is an introvert, and the recent change in her environment has made her distant emotionally (McLeod, 2009). The loud noises do affect the child’s development, minimizing the noise does help the child develop freely without feeling restricted or shy.

Encouraging Independence

Maya is progressing for a typical kid. Usually, she wants to pick her clothes, choose her toys, and help take part in household duties. When the child becomes more independent, they discover that they have many skills and abilities. During this stage, it is critical that you allow your child to explore their skills in an environment which is encouraging and tolerant to failure. Conclusion

Supporting Self-Control and Self-Esteem

As a parent, I am supportive of Maya, encouraging her to be independent but also that I protect her. The aim of this stage is for the child to have self-control and be able to develop self-esteem. Supporting a child at this stage will help increase their confidence and their chances of survival. When you criticize a child, he/she will not be able to adequately express themselves, and they will lose their self-esteem.
