The Term ’Psalm’

The term ‘psalm’ means a holly poem or song that is used in worshipping God. The Book of Psalms is one of the Biblical hymns that were collected and for part of the Old Testament (OT). The psalm can also be explained from the historical and etymological perspective. From the historical viewpoint, Psalm originated from the Old English ‘psalm’, and this term originated from the Latin name ‘psalms’. However, it is important to indicate that the same originated from the Greek word. ‘Psalms’. The terms ‘psalms’ literally means the act of twanging a harp or similar musical instrument. It is the process of playing a stringed musical instrument. Hence, Psalms in the Holy Bible refers to the Book that was dedicated to the praise and worship of God. Psalms are the book of worship, and it has both historical and religious connotations that must be understood not just in the context of worship but also in the context of the understanding of the inherent significance and meaning.

The Book of Psalms

The Book of Psalms just as already indicated is a collection of lyrical poems. It is one of the only two books that are identified as a composite work that contains multiple authors. The second books are the proverbs. However, unlike the Book of Proverbs, Psalms name their authors in the first title or line. For example, Moses wrote Psalm 90 while David was responsible for many of them as he composed more than seventy psalms. It is even evident that Solomon wrote one or two Psalms, and hence psalms is a collection of ideas and viewpoints presented in the form of poems and lyrics. Finally, it is essential to indicate that Psalms has enormous importance as it expresses the emotions and the bond that men had with God. The book expresses deep worship and is symbolic of one’s devotion to God.
