AT&T is a telephone and telecommunications company based in the United States that offers consumers voice, data, video, and internet services. The corporation was formerly known as the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, and it was responsible for the development of long distance and local telephone services. It was divided into three businesses in 1996, one of which retained the name AT&T. In four segments: International, business solutions, consumer mobility, and Entertainment group, the corporation and its subsidiaries provide communication and entertainment services in the United States and abroad. It also provides television sports, internet interactive games, and internet access to end consumers and other ISPs. The company’s Vision is “connect to good” while the mission is to connect people everywhere they are, live, play and work with their world better than anyone else. Alongside Verizon, it is one of the largest telecommunication companies in the US. In 2016 it generated revenue of US$163.8 billion, employed approximately 269000 people, and had around 134 million customers connecting to its wireless service (”ATT&T,” nd.). AT&T has set goals to achieve by 2020 which include but not limited to: Reducing CO2 emissions by 20%, Reducing power consumption relative to data growth on their network by 60%, develop and deploy robust methods to understand its network impacts on society, Collect over 200 million devices for recycling and reuse, collaborate with stakeholders to remove the skills gap by 60%, and work with its peers in the industry to improve environmental and social on technology supply chains.
T-Mobile Inc. is a telecommunication company offering mobile communication services in the US, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands. It is a subsidiary of another organization Deutsche Telkom Holding B.V. It offers messaging, voice, and data services to a market of approximately 71 million subscribers in prepaid, wholesale, and post-paid markets(”T-Mobile US, Inc.: Private Company Information-Bloomberg,” n.d.). It also provides tablets, Smartphones, and other handheld devices. The company also sells the devices and accessories to retailers and third-party vendors. According to Strategy Analytics, Verizon and AT& are the market leaders in market share followed my T-mobile, they hold about 30% or more market share in the US. The company has set goals including providing customers with the most outstanding and widespread wireless network possible thus the launch of ”T-Mobile take action” which advocates for improved coverage. The company’s chief operating officer insisted that they are seeing an opportunity of increasing subscriber by 30 to 40 million between 2016 and 2017 (Sheffer, 2016)
MIS is computer-based information arrangement assisting management and monitoring of activities such as administration, record keeping, accounting and others in an organization. Both T-mobile and AT&T cannot work without MIS since millions of subscribers and thousands of employees. Using manual methods to store, retrieve, and modify the data will be hard due to large capacities involved. T-Mobile makes use of hosted mobility management services HMMS; it allows employees to manage information even with their smartphones. Since HMMS can present security issues by use of phones, T-mobile implemented a turnkey MDM solution which manages installations, user support, licensing, and address security concerns. HMMS is cloud-based service which enables T-mobile to reduce costs on infrastructure and hardware costs. It also allows the user to monitor and track devices and network services to customers. And to the management, it generates reports providing information required to make decisions.
AT&T, on the other hand, uses integrated Global Enterprise Management System (iGEMS) to manage information in the organization. This system enables monitoring and management of all the company’s resources such as servers, applications, and network activities in a proactive manner (”AT&T integrated global enterprise management system,” n.d). The system allows operation teams to diagnose potential problems and take corrective actions quickly and efficiently. This system also allows real-time visibility of the control, security, and reliability which are essential requirements that ensure high performance.
T-mobile should implement a management information system tool which enables increased automation which will reduce workload, create a predictive environment and effective measure of performance. The system should improve resources management and increase user satisfaction. The MIS should cover the transactions processed to monitor services to customers and generate reports on activities and predictions on trends to help management in decision making.
