The foreign relations department created the open door policy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The goal of the policy was to maintain China open to trading equally with all countries around the world. The policy calls on all powers within the same areas of influence to refrain from interfering with any treaty or vested interest while also aiming to prevent any power from having complete control over the nation. As a result, an open system is established in which the victor prospers through rivalry. As a result, China and other Asian countries are free to venture into any market provided that there is no interference by special interest.

The open door policy can be argued to look after the interest of consumers who aims at buying quality commodities and services at low price. At the same time, the policy ensures that the products quality are continuously improved through the efforts of competing nations (America and China) of gaining new markets while at the same timer preserving the market share. On closer analysis, the policy has given either side advantages in the global market. For instance, through the policy, China is barred from interfering with the market share controlled by the Americans. Consequently, through the policy, China’s economy has continued to grow through the sale of cheaper products and services that are supplied all over the globe. Thus, the policy can be argued to have benefited the U.S. and China as well as other nations that are involved in direct competition in the business sector.

Fear for Future of Open Door policy

The open door policy was created under the Japanese auspices of a new regime of China. Through the policy, it is expected that in the long run there will be a complete elimination of American and other foreign economies in China. In the recent times, Americans have protested against the policy. From a business and economic point of view, the policy to some extent discriminates and works against the Americans rights. Thus, the policy to some extent interferes with foreign business to the extent that Americans are always reluctant from conducting business with China. For example, in the global market, China continues to gain markets across the globe especially countries located in Africa. As a result of the policy, China is seen to be taking over major markets especially in the construction industry that involve multi-billion dollars tenders.

In the global market, it is felt that the business industry ought to be regulated. However, the policy reinforces respect of sovereignty, protects from interference with treaty port, Chinese tariff of the time shall apply to all products landed in ports, and no high levy dues on vessels of any nationality frequenting any port. An analysis of these provisions in the policy tends to provide an upper hand for the nation with a large market share or a growing market. Thus, because the policy tends to give an undue advantage to one nation, hostility is bound to occur that will culminate with nation’s reluctance to trade with one another in the long run.

Containment Policy Support

The aftermath of World War II saw the establishment of foreign policy strategy termed as containment policy. Established under Truman Doctrine, the President warned the evils of communism that seemed to threaten democracy. The policy suggested by the diplomat George Kennan suggested that the United States needed to stifle communist influence in Eastern Europe and Asia. The containment policy on a closer analysis can be argued to possess various advantages. For instance, through the containment policy citizens of nations that were on the verge of being influenced by communists now had the freedom and liberty of economic and social rights. Thus, it can further be argued that the policy restored the power to the citizens whose private life and thoughts were under complete control of communism.

The nations that followed communism were characterized by the violation of democratic and civil rights as well as civil liberties. However, through team efforts that saw the United States and other nations create strategic alliances, there was a restoration of citizen’s democratic and civil rights. The ultimate benefit is that through the policy some nations received economic policy and technical assistance by simply being in the alliance. At the same time, nations that had superior military weaponry economies gained new market ventures by selling military artilleries to nations. Therefore, it can be argued that through the containment policy, some nation’s economy especially those within the Alliance improved. Consequently, as a result of the foreign policy relations also improved to the extent of forming trading blocs that boosted the Europe and Asia economy.

Argument against Containment policy

The containment policy in other instances impacted some nations negatively, especially in their economy. The looming tension of a war breaking out meant that some nations that had forged business relations had to be broken. At the same time, some countries became isolated simply because they did not want to take sides. As a result, some economies became damaged to the extent where inflation doubled characterized by a reduction in the purchasing power. For instance, nations like Germany, Vietnam, and Korea were compelled to spend heavily on their military an aspect that led to the isolation of other sectors. As a result, the economies became damaged with prices of commodities increasing. In retaliation, some nations made an attempt to print bills an action that led to the eventual weakening of the economy and purchasing power.

The containment policy to some extent concentrated more on building alliances rather than focusing on the citizens of nations. As a result of concentrating on alliances to alleviate communism, dictators were supported an aspect that led to a continuous violation of human rights. Thus, it can be argued that the containment policy supported actions that it was seeking to eliminate through communism. The only difference was that the nations that practiced communism did not practice the human right violation and rights. Additionally, the containment policy led to the rise of support networks that became terrorist groups that had initially been formed to counter communism. Importantly, the containment policy led to conflicts such as the Vietnamese and Korean wars that saw further damage to economies of warring nations.
