Humans have both good and bad traits in their personalities or temperament. Dr. Jykell’s willingness to support evil deeds and protect evil-doers in the society makes it clear that he is purely evil. Additionally, by asking his own life through the use of transformation chemicals to be Mr. Hyde proves that evil is at his heart and he is willing to do anything he wishes to ensure that he succeeds in his evil deeds.
Additionally, Dr. Jykell proves to be pure evil in the actions he undertakes as Mr. Hyde. Being Mr. Hyde, the Dr. manages to show his real nature and proves that he is an evil person. The letter also proves the pure evil nature of Dr. Jykell since he fails to show any regrets or condolences to his friend. Rather, he shows that he has moved on and have no regrets about his friend’s death by showing that there is no more friendship between him and Lanyon.
Moreover, the author also uses dramatic events to prove that Dr. Jykell is purely evil. Towards the end of the story, Dr. Jykell’s portions fail to work on him. As a result, he remains in his evil nature since all chemicals used to transform him fail to work. He uses all his scientific knowledge and new chemicals and salts which fail to change him into the good person. Symbolically, Dr. Jykell’s failure to transform from his evil nature exhibits the dominance of his sinful nature over his good character. His evil nature takes full control since he fails to bring back the good Dr. Jykell. Therefore, it is clear that Dr. Jykel fully gives in to his sinful and evil nature and decides not to turn back but carry on as an evil person as he always has been.
