Businesses take on a lone software development project. The customer extended the agreement requiring a high level of confidentiality during the software development process. As a result, the developer unintentionally gives the project description to an unauthorized person. He chooses to tell the project manager the whole truth after becoming aware of the incident.

I choose this dilemma as the Project manager has to choose between two equally unfavorable options. One side is that if he will disclose this policy breakdown with higher management it is sure that the developer has to lose his job and company has to face the customer reaction on another side if he hides it, then on salvaging someone’s post unethical and there is possibility that the customer will know about this then it will be a disaster situation for company.
Two ways to react are:
He should just hide this information from sales manager to preventing the organization from losing the project and defaming and saving that developer form the termination. His act of hiding this incident4 is justifiable as he is keeping the organization’s image intact and by completing the project getting profit for the team.
On the other way to maintain the trust with sales executive or customer, she/he should disclose all the material information about the incident and how the losses the project and its market value go down. So here Project manager has to deal with both ways and find out the accepted ways of dealing with this dilemma.
Normative Ethics
Normative ethics according to Normative Ethics (2013) refers to the classification of the social behavior into two classes either wrong or right. The practices are judged from the normative ethics of the actions that already happened and interpreted by the observer. Although the observer may give the false or honest opinion about the work.
I choose these three principles to take the positives even form this unfortunate situation. Judging this incident by these three laws is the best way to help the organization and customer.
Veracity – I choose this as all stakeholders are obliged to disclosing material information in solving the problem.
Confidentiality – According to this principle, if both customer and the organization fail to maintain confidentiality they are at a risk of losing the project. Therefore, to safeguard their image intact in the market it the responsibility of each stakeholder to maintain confidentiality.
Beneficence – This principle requires both parties to act in a manner that benefits both of them.
As per these ethics, the decision of telling the truth eventually will help the organization.
Analysis of Research Used Identification of the Actions in Matrix
In the project system environment, project managers are tasked with identification and interaction of the prominent organizations and individuals. Dudash (n.d) argued that the process helps in determining the ability of the stakeholders to respond to the project decisions. Consequently, after the incident has occurred, the remaining task is now how to handle it optimally. The project manager is in charge of selecting the suitable method of preventing the organization from defamation and maintains the intact of the project development. Doing these the client supports trust in the company and acquires the products with confidentiality.
Therefore, all the actions in the matrix have a common objective of solving the problem ethically without necessarily harming both the party’s organization and client. Notably, when all the provided actions are performed, then the issue can be morally solved. The policy developer risks being terminated, although when he reveals the truth, he significantly helps the company to resolve issue and the compliance spares him by not making unnecessary comments in his recommendation letter.
Subsequently, the client accepts the situation and become enthusiastic about sharing the incident on time and that the company took the proper way of handling the perpetrator and preventing the possible breach of confidentiality in the future. Finally, the project manager must ensure he discloses all the material information that helps in solving the situation ethically.
