Simply managing: What managers do

107 views 3 pages ~ 554 words Print

Bosses are department chiefs or organizational leaders whose only goal is to guide their staff in achieving a company’s goals. The boss’s personality may help a business or hurt its workers’ morale. According to some studies, a manager who mentors and inspires their employees will increase the desire of their team to work better. However, employees who work for a stressful supervisor often feel demotivated at work and risk developing chronic illnesses like high blood pressure. The three distinct types of bosses are thus discussed in the classification paper.

The absentminded leaders come first. The hands-off boss has the motivation of building his or her subjects by enabling them to have the freedom to display their skills. An employee needs to have excellent communication skills to work better with the hands-off boss since the boss believes that the employees know what he or she needs to do within the company 9Mintzberg 33). Such a boss believes that granting an employee adequate space to do his or her work with minimal interference could enhance his or her productivity in the business. The primary privilege of working with such a boss is the strategic guidance that he or she offers to the employee at the onset of any project. Such boss is often available for consultation whenever the subject is in need.

Second, the micromanagers draw their management style on their nature. Such boss often has internal anxieties that compel him or her to engage directly in the project for the project to be successful. In some incidences, the micromanager could be stressful to his or her staff owing to the high sensitivity to the little details of the tasks that he or she has delegated to the junior staff. Many employees working under the patronage of the micromanager consider him or her as being harsh. However, an employee who learns how to work well with the micromanager could learn better and progress fast in his or her career.

Third, the friendly boss is the envy of many employees in any company. The friendly boss often strives to a buddy to his or her subjects. However, the friendship is usually within the professional boundaries, In some cases, the friendship could extend to the extent at which the boss takes concern of the personal issues that reduce the morale of an employee. The weakness that such bosses may have is the inability to offer constructive criticism owing to the softness that they exude to their subjects. The benefit that they have to offer is the flexibility of work to their subjects.

In conclusion, bosses often need to conduct regular personality assessment and evaluate how their leadership style could have an impact on how they manage their companies. A good boss needs to be balanced. A manager should be a leader. That is, he or she needs to offer direction to their staff and empower them with the skills that they need to accomplish their objectives. A good leader should have an open communication process with the subjects and find out the development needs that each subject may need. Finally, a good boss should be a mentor to their juniors and grant them the capacity of accomplishing the objectives of the organization.
