Career development is crucial because it allows people to discover their skills and choose a professional path that is a good fit for those skills. It allows people to create a career plan based on their strengths and shortcomings and to take the required steps to improve their skills.

A human resource manager’s most common responsibilities include: The human resource manager is responsible for recruiting new talent that fits the company’s objectives by discovering sources of qualified employees, conducting interviews, and training newly hired personnel. The manager is also responsible for supporting and advising the management regarding policies, practices, and procedures concerning employment issues and how they can utilize human resources to achieve the company’s goals. The human resource manager should also ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws that are concerned with employment matters. The manager should investigate any employee complaint, respond to employees queries effectively and make recommendations regarding the same. In addition, the manager should ensure there is regular employee training by identifying training needs through employee appraisals. The human resource manager should also maintain safety and health programs and ensure that the company’s safety policy is up to date.

Job Qualifications

To qualify for a Human resource manager position, one should:

Have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a human resource related field.

Have over five years working experience performing human resource related duties.

Have vast knowledge on different recruiting methods.

Possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.

Have strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

Be able to support and provide timely feedback to employees, managers and regulatory authorities.

Have a good understanding of the federal, state and local laws concerning employment issues and comply with the laws.

Have the ability to work independently in the completion of assigned tasks by prioritizing on the tasks.

Possess strong analytical skills that will enable them to investigate any employee issues, analyze the information and give the necessary recommendation.

Be proficient with computers, especially MS office.

Should be a team player who contributes and supports the human resource team.

Possess mediation and negotiation skills.

Be able to multitask.

Possess strong organizational skills.

Be a professional when interacting with employees and senior managers.

Strengths and weaknesses based on the requirements

I have very strong analytical skills that would help me analyze employee issues and I believe this can help me get the position. My ability to work under pressure will ensure that I am productive even in a fast-paced organization where multi-tasking is required. In addition, I am quick on my feet which will ensure that I complete my tasks and respond to queries on time. I have very strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills which make communicating and interacting with people effortless.

However, I have no previous experience in mediations and negotiations. To make up for this, I will enroll for a negotiation skills class so that I learn on the different negotiation techniques. Moreover, I have previously worked independently but have never worked in teams and this may affect my ability to be a team player. I plan on participating in team activities, both in my social and school life, which I believe will help me become a team player at the workplace. To make up for the limited knowledge on human resource issues, I will enroll for a business course with a major in management.

At Kean University, enrolling for a business administration and management course will help me get this positions as I will acquire skills such as negotiation and mediation skills.
