There was a gifted and talented program at the school I went to. The School Enrichment Model, or SEM as it is commonly called, was the model that was utilized. The Renzulli Learning Profiler was used to examine each student who attended the school to identify their three strongest academic interests. Additionally, participation in an enrichment cluster is prioritized for students who display high levels of aptitude throughout the screening (Renzulli & Reis, 2014). When compared to other kids their age, gifted pupils can achieve at a much higher level in one or more talents, such as language, math, or problem-solving abilities. Additionally, such students show abilities that can get developed into different skills, for example, a child with a natural physical strength can get shaped to a piano player (Wilson, n.d).
Additionally, the teachers also recommend students who have shown interest in any of the designated academic learning areas.
I would recommend this model because of the following reasons:
Not all children learn the same way. Every child is unique. Therefore, there are different methods to teach different children as all of them have different abilities. Enrichment programs can help such children learn subjects like math, reading, and science in new and fun ways (Wilson, n.d).
Enrichment programs allow children to think in more creative ways as this can help to improve their problem-solving skills because they will be able to create new solutions to common issues.
Enrichment programs such as dance can help students develop their confidence when they master a step that they have been struggling to do so for a long time. Such will help them to realize that hard work, perseverance, and pursuing goals is worth it as it leads to success in the long run. Therefore, can give children the motivation to complete high school and graduate.
An enrichment program that is well rounded will help children with critical social skills because they will be working together with others as a team. The act helps them to solve disputes among themselves. Additionally, it helps the children work together.
Other benefits of the program include the programs give children the chance to explore what interests them. The result of this will be the opening up to more choices for careers and hobbies when the children grow older. Additionally, there are additional health benefits as children usually participate in sports which gives them a chance to exercise regularly.
To make the program successfully, I suggest that the following steps should be taken:
The whole child should be taught, and the program should be offered to coincide with the schools as a supportive program.
Another recommendation will be to those who want their children to enroll in such programs. They should ensure that the program actively involves them in the learning process of the child. They should also look for an enrichment program that offers a literacy program. Such programs like reading readiness for children will help in bringing value to the students by helping them to develop their language.
The programs should be offered in such a manner that coincides with the syllabus that gets taught in schools.
Therefore, with all these benefits of school enrichment programs, I could argue that they are both helpful and essential to academic success and social development of the child. With this in mind, I fully recommend any institution to adopt this method as it is advantageous to both the gifted and non-gifted children.
