Strategic preparation is regarded as the most difficult exercise to perform in any company. Any company must take a long perspective of what and how it wants to do in order to make fundamental decisions and create a meaningful mission and vision statements. As a result, a strategic strategy should be based on an in-depth examination of corporate policy, structure, personnel, and finances. As a consequence, an organization will provide a plan for planning and implementing relevant improvements, such as its future mission and vision. This essay will develop a new goal and vision for an existing organization, General Motors (GM), in order to improve its performance. Additionally, this paper will develop a leadership style and goals that the business will adopt to make sure that they achieve the objectives in a safe, cost-effective and quality manner.

New Vision and Mission Statement

The current vision and mission statements at General Motors have played a significant role in the success of the company. However, the current vision statement contains words such as related services and enthusiasm, which is open to many interpretations by customers. As such, it is of the essence to develop a new vision and mission statement that will help the company increase its performance. The new vision statement of General Motors is to be the world’s most customer-centric company in transportation products and services. By understanding our client’s needs, we will continuously improve our products, driven by innovation and teamwork to ensure consumer satisfaction. In today’s business world, customers know what they want; therefore, it is critical to ensure that companies incorporate such interests to promote their products (Cooper,2011). By adopting this new vision statement, General Motors will show their clients that their priority is satisfying them, an aspect that will attract and retain more customers for the company.

The mission statement of General Motors is detailed about their intentions of providing quality products and services to their customers. Moreover, it also states that the employees will share in their success, while the stakeholders receive superior returns on their investments. Although this mission ideal for the automobile manufacturing business, it would serve a greater purpose if it included the variables that can be used to determine the value of the company. For instance, the rate of innovation and brand image; such changes will provide clear strategies that the client will understand, thereby enhancing the effect of the mission statement. As such the new mission will be to earn customers for life by creating superior brands that inspire loyalty and provide an excellent experience by not only increased innovative practices but also by serving and improving the communities all around the world (General Motors Company., & Moody’s Investors Service, 2014). This new mission shows a comprehensive and holistic approach to addressing internal and external factors influencing the company.

Goals Aligned with the New Vision and Mission Statement

With the new vision and mission statement, General Motors should revise the goals and objectives of the company. Additionally, the management should establish a well-developed strategic plan that will increase the efficiency of operations for the business. Since the vision statement has incorporated the consumer-centric approach, there should be a platform to ensure that the firm can acquire valuable insights. Such feedback from its clients will enable the company to align its production according to consumer expectations. As a result, General Motors products and services will be preferred by more customers, an aspect that will create a competitive advantage for the firm in the automobile industry. Furthermore, the company will make more sales, earn more revenue and profits, lead to the growth and even expansion of this company (Bayou,&Dekorvin, 2008). It is important to recognize that although the company cannot control the market forces as they are beyond its control, General Motors can concentrate on their internal capabilities that are tied to performance.

In efforts to improve their products, General Motors Company should invest in research and innovation. First, this will make sure that they produce quality products and services in a cost-effective manner, aspects that will promote consumer experience and satisfaction. Second, General Motors should consider committing to environmental manufacturing as their goal. Here, the company can conduct more research on how to reduce carbon emissions of their vehicles. This will not only contribute to the protection of the environment from pollution but will also help reduce the cost of fuel for its consumers. Of significance to General Motors is the ability to work together as a team towards achieving a single organizational goal (Cooper, 2011). Therefore, the management should ensure that the employees are motivated and happy, which will, in turn, influence their commitment to the company.

Leadership Style to Adopt in General Motors

Being the largest automakers in the world, General Motors must adopt a leadership style that will help them dominate in designing, manufacturing, and marketing of automobiles. Also, to manage change in any organization, an active leadership style should be incorporated. In General Motors, inclusive leadership style can enable the company to garner employee advocates and improve business operations. This form of leadership emphasizes on collaboration to solicit advice on project direction from all stakeholders in the business. In the same way, the manager should be a good listener and open to diversity and other suggestions apart from their own (Scott, Jaffe,&Tobe, 2013). In essence, there is a diversity of customers, ideas, markets, and talents that influence the success of the business. As such, inclusive leadership style is essential to embrace in any organization seeking change.

Inclusive leadership style is important in every organization as the employees, stakeholders, and other members feel included in decision making. This feeling of trust and mutual respect is a pillar of most successful teams in the business world. Additionally, opening the doors for everyone in the organization to have an equal chance promotes the possibilities of people becoming real, authentic leaders. Inclusive leadership also improves the performance of the business as employees are more productive, engaged, and satisfied. Moreover, it creates more positive inter-cultural group relations, which increases turnover because there is less cultural bias. It is of the essence to realize that the concept of inclusiveness needs to consider all types of diversity (Robbins, DeCenzo,& Coulter, 2008). Therefore, the manager should include the opinions of the executive, the board, and staff in their decisions.

The Role of Inclusive Leadership Style in Sustaining Innovation

In a challenging and uncertain economic world, it is important for General Motors to become sustainable and survive in an ever-changing market place. As such, innovation is one of the business strategies that play a significant role in defining the competitive edge and success of the company. Inclusive leadership style incorporates diversity, a factor that influences behavior, expectations, and mindsets of people. If included in General Motors, this form of leadership will enable employees to maximize creativity to drive innovation and the long-term success of the organization. Essentially, most limitations in the workforce are driven by culture, symbols, and systems that direct the way things are done in a particular place. As a result, staff changes quickly due to the need to belong to their work environment (Echols, 2009). However, a leader who can leverage diversity to become the force that helps break through many limiting factors among the workers.

In many companies, they aim to assimilate employees to fit in and get along with the established program. This is, however, in conflict with how a firm can encourage and initiate efforts to diversify talent, ways, and ideas of viewing things. Creativity and innovation come in when an organization is committed to competing effectively in the ever-changing market world. Furthermore, inclusive leaders consider the contribution of every individual, no matter their title, to better adapt to opportunities and challenges affecting the business. This form of leadership strives to create an environment where every person feels part of the larger organization, across the globe (Carmeli, Reiter-Palmon,&Ziv, 2010). Therefore, General Motors will be able to value the perspective and experiences of every individual and engage them in the drive to succeed if they adopt an inclusive leadership style.

Conclusion

The new vision and mission statements to be incorporated in General Motors include consumer-centric approaches and variables that will enable the company to achieve success. Additionally, the business operations conducted in the company will be aligned with the new vision and mission to increase efficiency. As a result, the company will accomplish its goal more safely and cost-effectively, thereby creating a competitive edge in the automobile industry. To improve performance, General Motors should also adopt an inclusive leadership style to promote creativity and innovation in their workforce. In the same way, the company will ensure that their employees are engaged, satisfied, and motivated to undertake their tasks more efficiently.
