My field experience included attending a teachers’ workshop in Georgia, which was organized and hosted by the state. On February 21, 2017, I attended the Social Studies and Science Standard of Excellence rollout program, which was designed primarily for teachers to gain knowledge about the emerging changes in the standard of evaluation across the various grades, from kindergarten to grade 12.
My training experience began with learning about the new Georgia government standards for evaluating the sciences and social subjects. This modification did not imply a change in the educational curriculum. It was mainly intended to regulate the amount of knowledge to be taught in class, as the grades ascended and students matured. This was to ensure that the right levels of education were administered to students with consideration of their age and brain capabilities. Among the topics discussed in training were the current Georgia Performance Standard (GPS) that entailed how student work could be assessed concerning the level of skills portrayed. The other interactive topic concerned the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) that had been previously proposed to commence this year (2017).
In addition to the skills and new dimensions of student assessment and excellence standards taught during the training, there was a productive professional experience that I gained from this training was the networking I had with other educators from various schools who had longer experience and better qualification. I also shared with fellow college level teachers. The interaction left me with additional skills in teaching. Besides, the whole training had more practical application knowledge in regards to education. This also helped me actualize my college class knowledge.
