My favorite subjects Math, Chemistry, and Physics

My favorite subjects have always been math, chemistry, and physics and I have equally loved each of them throughout my academic career. If I had the opportunity to pursue this further, I could increase my understanding and proficiency in this area. I’m interested in chemical engineering because of the part it plays in society as well as my interest in the related fields.

Chemical engineers transform the life-improving processes created in laboratories into workable designs most of the products consumed hence are made safe because of the work of these engineers through ensuring that the environmental and health regulations are taken into account during production. Kathmandu, the town where I come from would really need the work of a chemical engineer to transform it from its current state of being one of the most dangerous environments to live in, to a safe place with clean water, functional waste disposal systems and a properly monitored chemical pollution. The most dangerous pollutants in this region are chemicals from manufacturing companies. It is my hope that once I complete the course, I will be in a position to give back to the society by transforming the region to one of the safest places to live. I also want to make the processes that produce the commodities that are frequently used cheap so that the purchase of things like plastics is easy for the poorer members of the society especially those living in Kathmandu.

Mathematics has not only sharpened my analytical skills but also taught me to approach problems in steps thereby improving my ability to identify the causes of many of the problems in the places I travel to and theorize how they can be addressed. Chemistry, the one subject that requires one to be observant has also improved my ability to notice changes around me quite easily and made me have the zeal to be among those correct the chemical processes that lead to the destruction of the environment. Nothing would bring me more satisfaction than being among those who design processes that improve the lives of people all over the world. The skills imparted on me by persistence in these subjects have molded me to become not only good in academics but also activities such as athletics, having represented my school in several competitions. Physics has been instrumental in demonstrating how the concepts learned in class can be applied outside the school setting and has been instrumental molding me into a person who tries to experiment with the little knowledge I acquire at any available opportunity. I may not have studied economics but the ideas of some of the greatest economist who showed the ability to simplify situations and explain how the world can be changed for the better, with the limited financial resource have been a great source of inspiration. The ideas advanced by the likes of Michael Friedman and the book The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith are a source of hope that the world indeed can be made more productive, safe and clean despite that fact that there is a lot of competition between nations resulting to some lagging behind in terms of development or sanitation whereas others seem to be on an upward trend in nearly all sectors.

Apart from being both the Alliance of Chemistry student’s organization’s president and the deputy Physics Students Associations head. I also take the role of coaching the second soccer team, a role entrusted by the schools’ soccer coach to me due to his faith in my ability to guide. Having lived in two different continents while in pursuit of education I understand the different social values and cultural practices of different groups of people hence I find it easy to get along with people from different backgrounds. Alternating between the sport and academic activities has made me a good time manager, instilled in me better organization skills and also a good listener who listens keenly to the suggestions of others before making important decisions that affect a good number of people. When undertaking activities that require teamwork, I do not fear to lead by example and whenever I make a mistake, taking responsibility for my actions is always an attribute I do not fear. Perfection is always my motto whenever I embark on a task.

I hope to get a chance to do chemical engineering at the University of Texas because it is not only one of the best-ranked institutions but also the encouragement from most of the graduates from this great institution. Most of the Chemical engineers I have had the privilege of talking to are former students of the institution and never cease to encourage me to pursue my goals here. The up-to-date facilities that students can easily access to do the practical aspects of the course makes the institution my dream institution. I may still have a long way to go, but one day I hope to be among those who contribute to shaping the future of the Earth.
