Human nature tends to make us value our personalities, but since traveling changes our perspectives significantly on the world, this is because change is as beneficial as rest. My first perception of the city was actually negative, and any excitement I had started to fade as soon as I arrived. I was accustomed to calm environments where daily events were relatively unremarkable, and if anything was recorded, it was usually about the commonplace daily activities of those around me. However, it later became clear to me that exploring new locations is the secret to broadening perspectives, especially for someone with a friendly and receptive personality. Living in America is undoubtedly an exciting privilege, but tasting the experience of living in New York City is something even appealing. Pacing up and down the stairs and to the city streets, one captures the ever first breath of city air, and for me, the first thought that struck my mind was that of freedom. I had just graduated, and with my small break from high school, it was my opportune time to have a new experience, in a new city.
The first aspect to note in the city is buildings that are not only surprisingly tall piercing the sky but also eye-catching. The buildings are a representation of the unique, talented, and professional architecture that had only crossed my sight via movies and music videos. The buildings in the city are extremely eye-catching, and they reflect the joyous mood of the setting regardless of the time of day. Another aspect that really opened my mind was the way people walked and talked in scores of diverse dialects, mostly talking on their phones and drinking Starbucks, and seemingly enjoying the city. It is no doubt that New York is the city of diversity since I encountered who were different in their own way, and I really learnt a lot about the need to coexist peacefully regardless the existing diversity.
Besides, the city is the capital of modern fashion for people of all walks of life. People in the congested sidewalks were actually desperate to shop in the renowned stores that are considered the dwellings of celebrities. Another aspect that can never miss one’s sight is the uncountable taxi cars and cabs that drive to and fro in various directions, thus the presence of scent of exhaust that fills the air. Also, as one exit a taxi or their vehicle and into the inner city, nostrils are aroused by the aroma of various restaurants, causing a craving for a New York hot dog, sold on the corner by street vendors who continuously call one’s name. Despite the continuous walking, one feels energized to press on due to the urge to discover what is known as the ‘New York Experience.’ I also learnt that the City has a special way of revitalizing all people and for that reason; I was not surprised to find that the demography of the people is mixed up, i.e., both young and the old.
My experience in New York City was one of a kind, to an extent I was unwilling to go back home. I almost disputed the saying that there is nowhere like home, but all in all, I was excited to have learnt a lot about the city. My time there helped me change my personality and accommodate individuals regardless their diversity.
