Inequality in Education in Los Angeles

In most of the nation, there are wide gaps in formal education, and Los Angeles is hardly an exception. The type of education differs from location to place, and depending on how it is managed, it can significantly influence how the community as a whole is oriented. In this situation, the education sector needs to deal with a number of vices that have severely hampered the growth and success of society as a whole. Equity has been a significant source of worry for many institutions, not only in Los Angeles but throughout the majority of the world. Racism is described as one of the main factors which affect equity in many schools in Los Angeles, and these allegations have been backed up by various researches on the matter. On the other hand gender inequality is also a major concern which affects equity in many institutions in the world of which Los Angeles is a part. Therefore, this paper makes a statistical overview and analysis of racism and gender inequalities which affect the education sector in Los Angeles.

Inequality in Los Angeles

Inequality is a serious form of separation or segregation among people living in the same geographical landscape. Basing on the article ‘An Equity Profile of Los Angeles,’ it is clear that despite the enormous changes in various sectors of the socio-economic lives of the inhabitants of the region, the concept of equity is not fully incorporated into the livelihood of the society. The author points out a critical concept in the employment sector where the wages do not reflect equally on the entire face of the community. In this case, the journal digs deep into the ills and the unbalanced nature of the Los Angeles region of America. The article further ahead touches on the issue of how education should be a unifying factor but instead how it has been used to divide individuals on gender and racism grounds.

Gender Inequality in Education

In the article by Claudia Bauchmann, she points out how almost all the aspects of education are disadvantaging the women in the society. In the article, she clearly outlines the methods through which the women are treated unfairly which make them trail men and boys. In this case, the author points out that the women suffer in the presence of the people and thus the biased condition overall experienced. The author goes ahead to provide tangible evidence by deeply analyzing the test scores which are scored by both boys and girls in Los Angeles (DiPrete and Buchmann, 23). In the large-scale international assessment, the statistics indicate that a larger percentage of boys perform higher in mathematics than the girls. On the other hand, girls scored higher test scores in reading than the males and thus providing the overall conclusion of the inequality that exists in formal schooling. Therefore, in this instance, he clearly outlines that the formal education sector serves as a mechanism of separation and removes the concept of harmony in the society.

Racism in Education

Racism is a significant ill that has affected many communities and institutions in many parts of the globe, and the schools in Los Angeles are no exception. Racism tends to subdivide the society into classes, the colour distinction among other factors. A deeper insight in the article by Peter Sacks takes an insight and a background check on the state of politics of seclusion in schools in Berkeley. Most public schools in this region try to rid the concept of racism so as to come up with the entire face of America (Sacks, 63). In the piece, the author notes that most of the individuals do not readily associate or identify themselves with their class, their poor or rich states but instead they consider themselves as the middle class. Taking this concept as the statistic, the author goes ahead to point out that the same way the students can identify themselves with the middle class is the same way they are quick to admit their race. Therefore, in this instance, it is correct to deduce that race and ethnicity are also a major divisive element in many educational institutions around the world.

Combatting Inequality in Education

A critical analysis of the education situation in Los Angeles it is evident that they are affected with the vice of inequality. There have existed various instances of bias in the learning institution which have brought significant changes in the overall orientation of the facilities. To combat such notions in the learning institutions, it is advisable for the management to offer more societal education that will help the students learn to accept and live with each other in harmony (DiPrete, 19). Additionally, the offering of civic education will also serve as a milestone that can not only be applied in Los Angeles but also in other countries across the globe. Diversification should be the primary element of cohesion which will ultimately remove the aspect of inequality in any society.

Conclusion

In conclusion, racism and gender inequality are vices which put the condition of the society at stake. It is, therefore, the mandate of any individual to perceive these elements as enemies of development and progress. Not only will this transform the education system in Los Angeles but it will also work to salvage other parts of the world.
