It is significant to highlight that certain historical mathematical themes may be developed and taught based on the interests of the students. However, for the sake of this study, we will focus on one of the complex subjects known as algebra. After that, this study will examine how authentic learning might be used to the instruction of algebra in accordance with California state standards.
One major area of mathematics that utilizes key ideas in this area of study is algebra. It makes use of the knowledge of mathematical symbols and highlights the guidelines for manipulating those symbols. Authentic learning can be defined as real-life learning which encourages students to come up with tangle and useful products which they can share with the world. Hence, the application of authentic learning to algebra will help to develop student’s reasonability. It provides them a means of applying their understanding of complex mathematical symbols and adherence to rules in areas such as critical thinking, dialoguing and conflict resolutions, (“Authentic Learning”)
Having mentioned the values of this topic to students, it is important to note that is are specific suggested steps that should be adhered to when teaching algebra with the concept of authentic learning in mind. First, there is need to adopt the idea of repetitive patterns to create a clear picture which aids remembrance. There is need also to encourage an excellent level of interaction between the students and tutors in a bid to spur understanding.
In conclusion, there a couple of prominent aspects of the California state teaching standards which include engaging and creating learning supports for all students. Planning and designing a learning experience for all students, (“Teaching and Leading - Professional Standards, CA Dept of Education).” Hence to attain these standards in compliance with the concept of authentic learning, I will ensure that all students are given the required attention and support during each lesson, and I will ensure that detailed lessons plan are always developed to cater of the objectives of each lesson.
