Constructivism and Learning

Constructivism is the term for the scientific study of human education and observation-based learning. It is predicated on the idea that humans build new knowledge through their encounters with novel things. It does advocate not giving the students all the knowledge they need to grasp but rather letting them find out more information on their own (Constructivism and Learning - Two Perspectives).

Standards-based Learning

A method of instruction, assessment, grading, and reporting is called standards-based learning. To exhibit proficiency, students must show that they have understood and applied the material in their curriculum. The system for required knowledge and skill acquisition has been established by the states (Standards-based, 2017).

Integration of Constructivism and Standards-based Learning

There is a way of following standard-based curriculum using constructivism approach to learning since there is a standardized expectation of knowledge acquisition. By so doing they will avoid feeding the students with the complete set of required information and instead direct them to learn the same.

Implementing Constructivism in K-12 Classroom

In the K-12 classroom setting, the teacher can allow the students to discuss science questions and recommend new dimensions observed. The teacher may also allow his students to reframe some given question and derive new perspectives of solving different problems. Additionally, the teachers may use other tools such as real-world problem-solving and inquiry-based to implement constructivism in the K-12 classroom setting. Leading the students through questions prompts them to develop critical thinking which is applicable in solving real-world challenges in future. The students can be encouraged to apply practical techniques of gaining information while they inquire how various activities help them obtain information (Constructivism and Learning - Two Perspectives).

Awareness of Preconceptions

To attain constructivism in a K-12 classroom setting, the teacher must be aware of his students’ preconceptions and address them in a suitable way such as introducing different concepts.
