One of the skills I value most is leadership which comes naturally to me. It is an idea that, in my opinion, is constantly evolving, whether it be on the playground in elementary school, in high school, or as a child. I’ve always wanted to lead and save others and been willing to do so. I was therefore determined to hold a leadership position when I joined UCF. 2018 will see the completion of my Bachelor of Science in Sports and Exercise Science program. I participate in a number of clubs and societies on campus, which has aided in my development as a leader. For leadership to be effective, I believe one has to have certain personality traits and skills. Being determined and self-motivated has come in handy in my case. As the Community Service Chair for the Omega Psi Phi Incorporated, a position I have been holding since spring 2017. I have to lead the other members in engaging in community service primarily within the Orlando Area. It has been able to engage in over 400 community service hours under my leadership. Allowing all members of my team to participate has always been the driving force towards the success of the fraternity.
As a leader, I also stress the idea of ’one-another’ among the members. Building a proper relationship between the club members makes an institution more effective. It was for me to bear the burdens of other club members. It is vital that a leader has to make an impact on other people’s lives to be considered one. I am the Community Service Chair for the John T. Washington Honor Society (since November 2016). The society deals with engaging in community service within Orlando. Personally, I have been able to develop professionally by attending workshops thus enhancing my leadership skills.
I am also the Corresponding Secretary of the Progressive Black Men Incorporated a position I undertook in November 2016. It involves itself in community service planning. We provide mentorship opportunities for children in Orlando by educating them on leadership development.
Last but not least, I am the membership chair for the Sports and Exercise Science Majors Club since February 2016. As the chair, I was able to communicate my vision to the club. The primary objective of this organization is to educate all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle like incorporating exercises in our daily activities. At this stage of my leadership career, I was task-oriented, and I completed all the duties assigned to me on time. My responsibility is to recruit new members into our club and retain those who already are.
I have been able to redefine leadership through my experience. These positions have tremendously exposed me to new opportunities. As a leader in the various clubs and societies on campus, I was able to realize that leadership is not all about being the head. It also needs you to serve the other members. All these positions have helped me develop as a person and become who I am today.
