1. Summarize the work in 2-3 sentences. (Please use grammatically correct, college-level sentences to answer this question.)

The text revolves around a heartbroken woman (Madea) who desires revenge for her husband (Jason) betrayal. Madea is willing to go to extreme lengths to avenge Jason’s betrayal of marrying a second wife. Madea kills Jason’s bride, the bride’s father and her own children in order to punish Jason.

2. Write at least 2 questions you have about the work. (Please use grammatically correct, college-level sentences to answer this question.)

a). Why didn’t the women of Corinth stop Madea from killing her own children?

b). Why did Aegeus offer to host Madea at his house if he was a friend to Creon?

3. List all

major characters/people and include brief descriptions for each. (Leaving this question blank will result in a deduction of points.)

Madea – A heartbroken woman who is determined to avenge her husband’s betrayal.

Jason – An uncaring man only determined to obtain riches and willing to leave his family in order to acquire the riches.

Nurse – A caring and loyal servant who understands what her master is going through.

Creon – A ruler who does not reason or take justifiable decisions but only makes decisions for his or his family own benefit.

Aegeus – An understanding and rational ruler.

4. List any relevant vocabulary words with definitions. Vocabulary words include any terms that you were unfamiliar with during the course of your reading; it may be helpful to consider words defined in the textbook in footnotes within the work. (Leaving this question blank will result in a deduction of points.)

Pontus – Refers to the Black Sea

Sophe – Refers to a person being wise or clever

Supplication – Refers to a ritual act through which an individual abased himself before a more powerful individual by kneeling and grabbing the latter’s knees, often touching his beard as well. Especially in claiming the protection of the gods, the supplicant’s wish should be granted.

5. List any themes that you see within the work. As a literary device, theme is the central topic or idea explored in a text. Usually the theme of a work of literature can be stated in one word, such as “love” or ”solitude.” A work of literature can, and often does, have more than one theme. The theme is generally not stated explicitly in the text, but instead is expressed through the characters’ actions, words, and thoughts.

a). Love

b).Hate

c). Courage

d). Individual vs Society

6. In your opinion, what is the most important part of the work? Be sure to explain the reasons why you feel this way. (Please use grammatically correct, college-level sentences to answer this question.)

The most important part of the work is Jason’s decision to marry Creon’s daughter. Had he declined to marry her and stayed with Madea, the latter wouldn’t have been vengeful and they would have a lived a happy marriage together.

7. What are your favorite lines from the work? Be sure to explain the reasons why these lines stood out in your mind. (Please use grammatically correct, college-level sentences to answer this question.)

My favorite lines are 831, 832 & 833. ”I treat my friends with kindness and come down hard on the heads of my enemies. This is the way to live, the way to win a glorious reputation.” These lines show the strong will of the character (Madea) to protect herself and not be bullied by others or concede defeat easily.

8. I was surprised by….

The decision of Madea to kill her sons. She gave birth to them and killing them would have caused her a double loss. She lost her husband and her children at the same time.

9. I was confused by….

Aegeus decision to host Madea after she was exiled by Creon. Creon was his ally yet he decided to betray him.

10. How did this work make you feel? Why do you think the story made you feel this way?

This work made me feel that betraying one’s trust does only affect him or her physically but mostly mentally. Jason’s betrayal to Madea affected her mentally that it made her commit murder in order to avenge his betrayal.

11. If you were an English teacher, would you want to share this work with your students? Why or why not?

If I were an English teacher I would share this work with my students so as to educate them on the effects and consequences of betrayal

12. Sum up the work in one word.

Betrayal.
