253 views 3 pages ~ 667 words Print

The need for medical attention has revolutionized over the years and independent nursing practice is now fully accommodated in the 21st century. This vice, like other practices, needs effective leadership, administration and coordination (Cherry, 2016). This paper will examine respective traits, personal development skills and other attributes required in order to maximize potential.

As an independently practicing nurse who is always working under supervision, excellent communication skills are important. Interaction with patients and upward communication with medical supervisors should be good and information accurately relayed (Kourkouta, 2014). Dynamics of healthcare systems and necessity of permanent interaction with outside environment present the significance of time management skills (Critical care nursing, 2017). Keeping myself updated with the latest approved drug developments and practice procedures, through continuous educative courses, helps in resource management.

Motivation from my supervisors has ensured maximum potential delivery and thorough execution of work (Regan, 2016). This has been enhanced through participative management, mentoring which provides physiological energy and good pay which ensures job satisfaction. Effective coordination and delegation of nursing practices has created a good working environment (George, 2011). Arising setbacks and challenges have been constantly communicated and swift action taken. In addition, taking care of patients from diverse cultures and preceptorship has also enabled learning (Blackman, 2015). Coordination has also assisted in my formulation of goals and objectives and good relations (Meleis, 2011).

Adherence to ethical regulations and patient’s bill of rights has helped reduce legal risks, for example, law suits for lack of confidentiality (Smith, 2015). Wearing the appropriate clothing such as gloves has reduced the potential of disease transmission from the patients (Glendon, 2016). The continuous adoption of quality assurance and total quality management practices has led to development of trust from the patients. Regular counselling has helped manage work related or any post-traumatic stress that may be experienced in the course of duty (Holloway, 2016). Working independently has enabled creative thinking, personal development and good management although it may seem monotonous and boring (Bryant, 2016).  Exposure to team work would provide a variety of ideas through brainstorming although decision making would take too long due to consensus. Adherence to the above named qualities has enabled working independently, recognition of weaknesses and constant improvement (Wagstaff, 2004).
