The governing society is shown as foolish and unfaithful in the film Rules of the Game. Here, spouses, husbands, lovers, servants, and even masters sneak into each other’s chambers and halls. Many people in this society have secret affairs, and many more engage in similar behaviors while yet feigning to live in a civilized society. The film’s director demonstrates how hypocritical this is. The ruling elite and society in France are the primary topics of this film. The movie director Renoir who was a leftist and a popular Frontier his main subject was the Nazi sympathizers. This movie was however faced by many challenges and even banned at some point. This movie is controlled by a network of emotions where in this era the war was approaching. There is the issue of class divisions which is relevant even in our current society. He goes through the hypocrisy of the rotting society where all manner of wrongs is committed. The issue of interwoven romances in that particular society is also commendable.

The movie director Renoir examines the society which is depicted as decaying. In this movie a party organized by wealthy French aristocrat and his Viennese wife, in this party there is a possessive mistress, a family friend who worships the wife from a distance, her lover a heroic aviator. The servants watch and imitate their employees; here there is a circle of a maid, a gamekeeper husband, and a poacher. The lovers intermingle in the party and this causes so much chaos. The gamekeeper goes against the rules of the game for revealing his true emotions. Here all other people never reveal their emotions and they have their affairs in secrecy. The aviator also reveals his true emotions when he says that he went across transatlantic for a woman who did not even come to welcome him at the airport.

In the movie Breathless, a small-time thief is in trouble in France for stealing a car and killing a motorcycle policeman who pursues him after stealing that car. He is wanted by the authorities and he later renews his relationship with an American girl studying journalism at Sorbonne. The thief Michel Poicccard plans on collecting a debt before escaping to Italy and hopes to run away with the American girl. He recklessly pursues this girl despite his name being all over the newspapers. This movie is in the new wave era in France after the world war has come to an end and the society is trying something new to grow both economically, and socially. The movie shows how this man Poicarrd is so reckless and he doesn’t care much even about the crimes he has committed. The American girl is later met by a detective and shown a photograph of Poiccard in a newspaper, she admits to having met him but says that she doesn’t know where he is. She then realizes that she loves him and she makes a decision to help him on his flight to Italy. The movie shows that in this New wave era many in the societies are now free to move and love. Franchini is from America and has come to study in France and this shows that the war has cooled and people can conduct their business freely without too much trouble. This is unless you are on the wrong side of the law like Poiccard who steals vehicles and goes to resell them far away.

Indicate which film you believe to offer its audience the most compelling narrative, and why.

The narrative Rules of the game is very compelling to the audience. The movie basically begins with a national anthem and then an aviator Andre Jurieu completes a journey across the Trans Atlantic. His flight is considered so successful ten years later after Lindenbergh. He is later heard whining on the radio after a woman failed to welcome him back from his 23 hours journey. The aviator is in love with someone’s wife \and this starts the series of many love affairs and adulterous activities in this society. Some people in the movie try to play by the rules of the game.

Indicate which film you believe has the best acting overall, and why

The movie Breathless is well and better acted. This is in an era where people had begun learning so much about the acting industry. A lot of improvements can be seen in this movie since in this era of the new wave a real wave was sweeping across Europe. The acting industry was taken into consideration. The way we see the thief stealing a car, being chased by policemen, meeting the American girl shows that a lot had been learned at this time. The detective goes to look for the thief in the house of the American journalism student, this part shows a lot had been introduced in this industry.

Indicate which film you find to have the most interesting sets (indoor and outdoor), and why.

The movie Breathless has very interesting set indoors. It is for sure breathless for example when the American student Patricia Franchini goes into her room only to find this man Poicarrd. The way in which he got into the house despite him having trouble with the authorities and also when he goes to collect his debt. The part outdoor where he steals a car and a policeman is chasing him with his motorcycle is so interesting. From when he kills the policeman and is now on the road escaping from these authorities. On the other hand, the movie Rules of the game has the most interesting indoor parts as compared to the Breathless movie. The masters, servants, wives, husbands and even lovers sneaking into hallways, bedrooms draws a picture that is quite interesting. The affairs conducted in these hallways people kissing each other but pretending on the outer society is very sarcastic.

Let’s say that, for some reason, you could only preserve one of these two films to be shown to people in the year 2217. Which of the two films would you preserve, and why?

The rule of the game is a movie that I would choose to preserve to be watched in years to come. The movie shows what society has been evolving from. The war is also an important attribute that would call for preservation. Many people are interested in knowing the activities that were happening before and even after the world war. This movie would give a clear view of how the society was behaving and how that relates to their current society or even compare if the same culture is repeating itself. The rule of the game would cause a stir in coming years where it would help people see if they are in a society that was full of hypocrisy. Mainly adultery is the main theme in this movie and this is followed by hypocrisy where no one wants to be known what they do in darkness.
