Muslim women sometimes wear the hijab, also known as the headscarf. While western women can wear the hijab on occasion, it is an important part of the Islamic faith. Both men and women, according to the Koran, should cover their bodies and be humble. It is important to remember, though, that the holy book does not expressly state how its adherents should dress. Like in many other religious scriptures, the way or code of dress is not explicit and has been influenced by years of cultural rituals in various cultures. As such, some scholars especially the more conservative factions in the Muslim world would argue that it is a religious compulsion for women to cover their heads with the hijab.

Styles of Wearing the Hijab

The hijab can be worn in different styles depending on the individual’s preference. The simplest way of wearing the scarf includes four key steps:

1. First, fold the hijab into a triangle.
2. Position the scarf on your head while keeping one end longer than the other and it should go under the chin.
3. The third step is to wrap the longer end of the scarf behind your head and bring it all the way to the other side.
4. Finally, wrap the hijab behind your head and at the shoulder.

Religious and Cultural Significance

The most important point here is that the hijab is an important religious and cultural clothing item. Although the Koran requires both men and women to cover their bodies and maintain a modest look, the scriptures do not specify how this should be achieved. Lastly, given the trends in the contemporary fashion scene, the hijab can be worn in different styles depending on individual preferences.
