This essay is closely related to the most recent book written by Tyler Cowen, a renowned American economist. The Complacent Class is a book that explores the factors within America that hinder American society from reforming. Cowen claims in the book that in recent years, Americans have been more immune to reform than in previous decades. Cowen proceeds to argue that the American people’s aversion to change has changed how they live, for example, how they do business, and how they spend their free time. From a critical analysis, it can be established that the Americans are working hard to avoid change or to postpone it. Cowen explains this by stating that the American people are doing this in various ways, for example, making sure nothing happens where they live so that the value of their homes do not go down. There are various pockets of the complacent class in America and according to Cowen they exist in different layers, for example, educated elite of the country who are most probably in a comfortable position and they try their level best to avoid losing what they have. The segregation currently being witnessed in America is as a result of the above-mentioned complacency. This indicates that the American people are more likely to pair with those that are like themselves, for example, racial segregation and the segregation by income and these affect the way business is being done in America.

It is true to state that indeed America is resisting change and this is greatly affecting business and the way of life of the American people. Different complacency pockets protect their interests and this leads to segregation. Currently, illegal immigrants in America are being detained and deported back to their countries, it is important to note, that these immigrants lived, worked, and spent what they earned in America, thus, greatly contributed to the country’s business sector and the economy at large. They provided cheap labor to the American firms and due to the segregation that is currently making a majority of them get detained, business in America will be highly affected.
