How do people enjoy music?

People like songs because of their content, style, uniqueness, inventiveness, and the inherent talent they contain, regardless of the time period in which they were written. As a result, songs with these characteristics typically last longer than those without them. This explains why some classical music from many years ago is still listened to and enjoyed today. While many young musicians and artists are skilled and create music that is entertaining, it may be argued that many older artists deserve and receive more attention than do the latter.

In addition to having significant lyrics, old classical music had a profound depth to it, in contrast to the shallowness of the lyrics in modern music. The reason is that most classical musicians of olden days wrote their own songs (Bukofzer 8). Unlike modern classical music whose lyrics are repetitive and full of swearing and typical situations such as love, partying and clubbing, old classical music such as John Prine’s Hello in There revolved around many subjects or situations in life (Bukofzer 10). As such, classical music of olden days is great for hearing at any place or situation. Additionally, old classical music is much classier and filled with empowering and positive lyrics, as opposed to modern hip-hop where majority of rappers regularly insult their rivals and audiences openly.

People also enjoy some songs that were composed long time ago since the artists demonstrated great talent in their songs. Artists such as Luther Vandross and Timberland had real talent that is hardly found in the contemporary music (Bukofzer 10). For instance, concerning the materialization of old classical music, musical talent came first before image. What is more, old songs inspire a considerable percentage of modern classical music and styles, implying that the concepts of old classical music were original whereas those of modern songs are recycled (Winckel 12).

Old classical musicians played several instruments and never used synthesizers and auto tunes, unlike modern music in which nearly all artists use auto tunes. This further demonstrates that modern classical musicians lack the real music talent that was there in the past. Olden day artists had to know how to play instruments and sing to make music, rendering their music more refined and original. According to Winckel, nowadays, individual who are musically ignorant in theory can be a renowned producer, thanks to computer programs (18).

However, not all contemporary music is boring or bad. There are numerous mainstream and underground bands and songs, which demonstrate real talent and have actual depth, and as a result, are likely to last more than ten decades and still be enjoyed. Examples of pop songs in this category include Despacito by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee and Toxic by Britney Spears. Besides demonstrating great talent, these songs draw a wide range of categories of audience, rendering them both inescapable and inevitable.

Overall, individuals will enjoy songs based on their content, style, originality, creativity, as well as the natural talent rooted in them, regardless of the period in which they were composed, making them last longer than the others. Old classical music tends to possess more of these qualities of good music, hence their wide appeal to many people. While some modern classical songs are equally good, there is need for modern artists to improve, by basing their art on talent, and covering a wide range of situations and themes in their music.
