Gender discrimination and stereotyping are frequent in the nursing profession. This is related to the attitudes of society and the general public about nursing practice. Men are disproportionately affected by this discrimination. Males are most affected when it comes to the specialty selections they have to make in the nursing sector due to the discrimination barriers they confront. The ratio of men to women in the nursing industry demonstrates prejudice against men entering the field; 9:10 of nurses are women, and 98:8 of midwives are women (Balboni, Michael and John, 2017). Women also face some discrimination in the nursing and medical field especially when it comes to hierarchy. The data presented shows that few women are given supervisory duties and only few make it to surgery levels.
Despite the fact that men enter into the nursing practice for the same reasons as women, they are termed as male nurses. Men are exempted from certain nursing areas such as midwifery qualifications, and rejection in maternity rotations and other discrimination fields in obstetrics and gynecology. Nursing training programs are also structured such that they favor women than men due to the believe that the nursing fraternity is a women based career. However, this trend can be stamped out through some ways. This can be done by challenging stereotyping when you hear about them. This is by eliminating duty definition that mainly leads to gender discrimination. In addition to this, provision of role models in this faculty is a major way of doing away with discrimination. Moreover, making the nursing fraternity, an open forum where there are no jobs for men and women will be a big step in making gender discrimination and stereotype disappear (Yoost, and Lynne, 2015).
Relationship between Spirituality and Health
Spirituality and religious beliefs and practices serve a major role within an individual health and well-being. Spirituality is relevant when addressing an individual state of health and well-being. People who acknowledge the concept of divine spirituality within themselves trust the relationship between spirituality and physical health attainment. Spirituality is intensely connected to the physical health and mental stability about people with chronic infections. When people get sick, sometimes they feel like God has abandoned them. There is, therefore, the significant association between components of religion and physical and mental health. Religious practices such as prayer and meditation are greatly related to physical health. The relationship between religion and health has seen the much integration of religious individuals in the healthcare fraternity (Cobb, Christina and Bruce, 2012). There is much use of significant religious administrators in patient’s recovery programs. There is also teaching of religious aspects of counseling in nursing and medical practitioners to make the interconnection between health and religion to bear fruits.
