The gaming industry has evolved tremendously as a result of the evolution of sports, new consoles, and accessories. As a result, the ever-increasing curiosity that accompanies gaming and other electronic devices is exceptional in the world of gamers, leading many people to see games as a need rather than an accessory in their lives. Separation from reality, prolonged playing time, social isolation, reasoning and strategy games, brain conditioning, and hand-eye coordination are some of the consequences of gaming in my life. Separation from reality has also been an effect on my involvement with games since playing games for a long time has made me addicted to them causing me to forget what is happening in reality since I made the gaming world my new reality. For instance, I found a game like “Battlefield” to be fascinating as I could shoot my enemies, blow up buildings, launch rockets, etc. It was way more fun than the reality since I cannot do this in real life. Hence, I try as much as possible to make the games my reality.
As games are always being improved and made more fun, they tend to become more addictive, ending up making users devote too much time to it and forget their consequences. In my case, the effects of too much playing time are messing up with my work schedule, lifestyle, and health. It has been the case since at many times I have been engaged in games all night forgetting that I need to wake up early the next morning for work. As a result, many times at work I have not been performing my best due to lack of sleep, which limits my focus and concentration within work. Besides, regarding lifestyle, it has sometimes interfered with my priorities forgetting my priorities in life regarding family, activity, friends, etc. as I have been letting the game prioritize my time. Additionally, due to my long-term involvement in playing games, I have combated with long-term health issues like carpal tunnel, headaches, eye strain, etc.
Social isolation is also another impact that games have in my life. This factor has a massive effect on me as I used to sit home for most of my time playing games, if not that then I would go to work or attend my classes. As soon as I am through with school and work, all I can think of is going back home to play my PlayStation 4. It has had a massive effect on me in the long term as sometimes I feel very lonely and depressed. Gradually I got used to not seeing people and being alone which has made it very difficult for me to communicate with others, this, in turn, made things difficult for me in the reality when it came to engaging in more formal conversations at school or my workplace since my confidence was very low.
Thinking and strategy game have also been beneficial to me. It has helped me with specific skills like being able to work independently and be able to solve problems efficiently, such games are done in real time and are supported by a computer system. The system incorporates these games on Smartphone apps, an example of a strategy and thinking game that I admire is “Civilization” because it involves a lot of strategy and thinking required as a user is running a civilization by himself and using the strategy one can know how to develop and improve the whole city. Strategy games have a beneficial impact in the real-world scenario within work since the skills that I acquired from the game I can use it within my work environment.
There are games created where game players make use of their brain to train so they can effectively learn what is required of them within the game and experience a bit of puzzle that helps users to learn as they also have fun playing. One good example of such a game that I used to play is “Medal of Honor.” This game is based on factors that surround the history of war, and it explains to users some of the things that had happened during that period. These sections of the game are strategically placed in the cut scenes for game players to watch before each mission so they can be educated on historical matters while playing.
I have also managed to gain useful skills such as hand-eye coordination as a result of always moving the controls to create a movement on my Smartphone, tablet, or the TV screen. An example of a game that has improved my hand-eye coordination is the “Box the bag”. It is a game application similar to Wii and Kinect games. When playing the games, I use my Smartphone to box the bag; I punch the boxing bag that contains targets linked to my Smartphone camera to test the accuracy of punches and jabs, this is the only game I have played where I employ my body to meet the visual targets.
Many game users have become attached to the person and life they believe they have become through games that provide virtual worlds. These factors have caused game users who otherwise would not be living the life they wanted, in reality, to get caught up in the unrealistic and fantasy expectations of video games. However, it is evident that games have both positive and negative impact in my life.
