Cohen’s Examination of Arguments in Modern Culture

Cohen provides a case that describes the different facets and types of arguments used in modern culture. The speaker’s points sound eerily similar to some of the issues that people face on a regular basis. The dialectical model of argument, which characterizes an argument as a battle with lots of yelling and crying, is particularly evident in any social environment of modern society. On a personal basis, I have used dialectical arguments in nearly all of my situations because each environment entails a situation in which my team or I choose winning over defeat or finding an agreement with the opposing side. For example, I once engaged in an argument where parties discussed the impact that individual leaders would have on the society. The argument involved lots of shouting as each party tried to convince the other that their preferred candidate would be the most suitable. Each participant seemed to be speaking simultaneously such that the argument turned out to be non-fruitful in any sense since we could not agree on any aspect regardless of some of the leaders having served in previous tears. It was never a game of wits or facts as described in the arguments as proof model. In some instances, the cases involved aspects of arguments as a performance since every participant wanted to make their points heard by everyone around the area.

The Challenges of Adopting New Argument Strategies

I agree with the speaker that no effective measure can be undertaken currently to change the argument models. The speaker indicates that people would need to adopt new exit and entry strategies to realize positive change in the argument spheres. However, such procedures are impossible especially in a society where people strive to win by all means. While the author recommends that people consider cognitive gain as the ultimate victory, the idea is impractical to the full sense in a majority of the population. I believe that personal egos and the desire to be right are some of the hindrances to achieving the desired effects of an argument in a society that has treated winning as glorious and losing as ignominious.
