In addition to imparting knowledge to students, teachers also have a duty to enforce certain behavioral norms on their charges while they are in class. In order to accomplish all of these goals, a great learning organizing tool for teachers must be able to confirm positive behavioral management to the students as part of a class management control plan. Classroom disruptions, disobeying directions, talking during class, failing to turn in assignments on time, disrespecting instructors and fellow students are among the most frequent forms of bad behavior. Teachers can engage in professional development events to hone their intervention skills and prevent disruptive conduct in their kids. I have so many concerns and fears regarding the management of the learning environment because of the difficulties that classrooms harbor today. My worries about when to introduce new tasks, how to make the students more cooperative in class discussions, how to make the students pay attention during lessons, and how to establish consistent classroom routines. Sometimes it becomes difficult for a teacher to know what to expect or to have high expectations for the students not met. An excellent example in the video is when we see Mr. Torres having high expectations on his freshman students only to realize that they lack the prerequisite skills for high school math (The new teacher experience, 2017).
I feel more confident in using verbal and non-verbal cues to gain control over the class; this will help in managing the learning environment where I can obtain power and lead the students appropriately. I also feel more confident when I build communication expectations though being considerate of their concerns and fears, for instance on Miss Saray class where some few students have repeated the biology class two times this becomes difficult because building that students self-confidence becomes very demanding to the teacher (The new teacher experience, 2017). I believe that what gives me more confidence as a teacher is not assuming that the students are comfortable, but rather give room for questions and corrections from the students. The ability to be patient and calm even at the worse scenarios where students expect an outburst from me makes me more confident in my profession and also help me manage the learning environment (Palmer, 2017).
The professional development skills that would assist me to become more confident in my abilities to manage student’s behavior include; having a flexible and open mind, positive thinking and having a daring and explorative attitude by trying out new teaching practices (New teacher survival guide: Classroom management, 2017). I have also learned the significance of developing good counseling skills which will help me to reach the student’s mind and heart and build relationships that will assist in managing their behaviors. I also have learned and understood self-awareness plan which helps me to identify my strengths and weaknesses when dealing with the students.
The concerns and fears I have as regarding managing the learning environment, may not be easy to reflect upon because some of the concerns that I have proposed may turn out to be the most difficult to handle and implement in a classroom. Neither is the details mentioned above of what makes me feel most confident concerning the management of the learning environment, and the exhaustive accounts of activities on what I as a teacher can do to develop professionally.
