I agree that it is possible to advance a teacher while still pursuing career advancement in the classroom. Promotion of change is a demanding task, not one of the most difficult tasks in teaching. For me, challenging tasks are the best since they draw out the best in me. Engagement between teachers and students, which must always be maintained, is the first factor that encourages change in the classroom (Maryellen, 2012). To promote engagement, as a teacher, I will begin by enhancing self-belief of students because various researchers have indicated that students engage better when they are left to be their learning agents and encourage them to achieve what they consider to be meaningful goals to them (Maryellen, 2012). It is true that teachers face resistance from different groups when trying to implement change that did not exist, but this is not unique to teaching profession alone because the same thing happens to other professions too. It is evident that meditation leads to the re-evaluation of one’s teaching techniques and triggers the teacher to think about better ways of accomplishing his or her teaching goals.
Even though consulting with students to understand better ways of promoting change in teaching is a big idea, but status quo that teachers find themselves in becomes an impediment to this noble idea. For instance promoting that engagement in teaching will depend with the class where you come from as a teacher because you may be a teacher from a high-class neighborhood teaching in a small town. In this case, you might find it difficult to regularly engage with students to find out how to effectively promote change. Furthermore, children and parents may be a big stumbling block to change that you wish to implement.
