Concepts presented in the novel

Three concepts are presented in the novel, and they all center on Winston. Winston was chosen as a member of the Ingsoc tribe in the Oceania area. The books discuss how his “friend” tortured him because he had an open mind and had fallen in love. He submitted to Big after his buddy tapped into his anxieties and fears. Following his surrender, he is successfully brought back to Big Brother’s side.

Winston’s decision to search for collaborators

Winston began listing all the bad things the Ingsoc movement had done in Oceania after clearing his thoughts, and he considered how to change the situation. Other than her lover, he made the decision to search for collaborators. He assumed O’Brien was his friend and his actions suggested to be that of an open-minded person by acting this way O’Brien was able to know Winston mindset thus he was the easiest person to torture Winston psychologically. At that time Winston never knew the role played by O’Brien, his friend while in the cell.

Winston’s torture and psychological manipulation

Winston’s torture started when O’Brien ordered his release from holding the cell to the torture room. He started filling Winston’s brain with ideas which made him rebellious. The was taken into a cell, tortured violently and forced to accept false accusations. After O’Brien’s torturing effort with failure he took Winston to room 101 where his fears were tapped into, after few days he forgot himself and despised his love to Julia. Even after Winston encountering Julia they did not talk in any way and never felt love to each other thus a successful result of O’Brien’s torture.

Post-torture consequences and Winston’s mindset

After the torture, Winston tried as much as possible to forget his childhood memories, and if they appeared, he thought that it’s his imagination and not reality. Even after Eurasia defeated Oceania, he did not celebrate instead he saw Big Brother’s picture and was convinced that his rehabilitation was successful. He acknowledges loving Big Brother.

The impact of torture on Winston and Julia

The physical and psychological torture that Winston and Julie went through made them change their mind. Winston trusted a wrong person resulting in his life was ruined making him subject to the system he was rejecting.
