Emotional Intelligence and its Components

Bradberry (2014) claims that emotional intelligence is made up of four personal or social competence-related abilities. The emphasis on the person’s understanding of their feelings and behavior is one of the personal competencies. Self-awareness and self-management are among these abilities. On the other hand, social competencies cover a person’s relationships with people outside of themselves. Relationship management and social awareness are among the abilities.

Personal Competencies

My high emotional intelligence (EQ), which can be attributed to my high level of performance, good decision-making, and positive relationships with peers and coworkers in the workplaces, became apparent as I placed my personality under the four competencies. Based on the personal competence, the skill of self-awareness is evident from the behavior of taking time to think of any situation before deciding on an action to take, understanding innate emotional changes, avoiding stress to achieve timely results, as well as noticing tasks to complete naturally. These abilities manifest themselves in everyday life and through having an awareness of their existence hence guiding my next steps. For example, I am aware when feelings of anger start developing. As a result, I can be able to walk away from that situation as a way of cooling down tempers or resorting to being alone until calm.

Self-Management and Effective Decision Making

On the other hand, the second skill of self-management under personal competencies come in hand in developing a pattern that helps me choose the effective way of responding and managing the emotions and behavior (Bradberry, 2014). I realized that I could plan tasks, use logic and reasoning to make decisions, finish tasks in time, prefers having practical solutions and employing objective and critical analysis of situation before I can act on a scenario. For example, despite having anger and disappointment in a person’s behavior, I can control and suppress it while thinking of how best I can respond to the situation based on the logic of the situation as a way of finding a solution. Such moves encourage positive outcomes and enhance the high performance of effective decision making since the nature of the actions are not guided by the feelings of anger but the facts at hand.

Social Competencies and Relationship Management

Based on the other competence, some of the attributes under the social awareness skill include being aware of the past events and experiences, having knowledge of best responses to various situations to avoid conflicts and the fact that it is normal for the dispute to occur in different relationships. The knowledge is important since it helps not only to understand my emotions but those of others too since they are human beings too (Bradberry, 2014). As a result, the second skill of relationship management comes in handy since I can utilize the understanding of my emotions and behavior, as well as those of others, to improve various interaction processes (Bradberry, 2014). Some of the traits to achieve this include discerning a potential conflict and avoiding it, using memories of past event to make rights decisions to negate the pitfalls in last experiences, and giving preference to one-to-one communications or relationships. For example, if I see that a comment I made in a conversation is hurting someone, some of the emotions such as resentment, or avoidance of contact can signal a potential conflict. However, through confronting the person, asking for forgiveness and pledging a solution to the standoff, the conflict can be solved, and the friendship returns to normalcy.

Conclusion

In conclusion, these attributes complement the personality traits under the MBTI. According to my earlier selection, I have strengths in the combination of ISTJ which means I like using facts to draw a pattern of guiding my actions and behavior at present (Reinhold, 2014). I use the present lessons to guide my future engagements to avoid similar confrontations in future. Therefore, the emotional intelligence aspect to guiding the actions of an individual through the two levels of competencies entailing for personality skills is helpful not only for an individual to understand self but also on how to use the same to achieve excellence and success in each endeavor.
