The primary themes from my personal ’lessons learned’ include insights into leadership growth that include resilience, agility and simplification, trustworthiness, communication skills, and diversity. Leaders must be nimble in order to aid in the simplification of organizational structure, procedures, and offers (Northouse, 2014). They should devise ways for remaining resilient and open to new information. Workers in diverse companies come from varied ethnic backgrounds; therefore, executives must learn good communication skills to work with diversity and inclusion. Consequently, the success of the leaders is dependent on their credibility within the organization.
The characteristic theory is the leadership theory discussed in the readings with which I most identified. The theory states that people are either born or created with different leadership qualities. The qualities that can make one become a good leader involve creativity, intelligence and sense of responsibility (Northouse, 2014). I identified myself with this leadership theory because it believes that everybody can be a good leader. A person who is intelligent and creative can excel in leadership roles even if he or she lacks the natural leadership qualities. The trait theory also helps in analysing both mental and physical characteristics that are common among leaders.
The action that I still intend to move forward with while developing my leadership is diversity and inclusion. My leadership accommodates all members of the society making them feel included in the decision-making process. Moreover, this leadership action will help me employ more workers from different ethnic backgrounds in future. The questions that I still need to ask about becoming a good leader comprise: 1) Does a person require motivation to become a good leader? 2) Is there a shape for a perfect leader?
The suggestion that I would give to an incoming OLCU 325 students beginning their leadership development journey is that they should take a leadership personality test and find their passion. The students should also beef up their communication skills to curb the issues of misunderstandings or misinterpretations in an organisation.
