Catacomb’s Technological Needs

Catacomb is a multinational provider of supply chain and freight management services. It needs a technological answer that improves communication between its staff and customers.

Improving Network Communication

First, I’d suggest expanding their technology network’s bandwidth to improve communication between all of their US locations and the data center. Better cooperation between Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, San Diego, and the other US offices will result from this approach. Given Verizon’s network dependability, speed, data performance, and text performance, I would suggest that management take this into consideration for these network connections (Acampora, 2013).

Increase Router Speed

The company is on a growth trajectory therefore more employees have joined them and communication has posed a challenge in the network. The router may be overwhelmed by the multiple devices connected due to increased number of employees in the organization. This has an effect on communication since it slows down the bandwidth, to increase the speed I recommend reduction of the MTU size.

Effective Data Communication

The maximum bandwidth may be limited by having slowest part between one of these states and the data centre reducing effective data communication (Acampora, 2013). When a router is sending or receiving information it is usually broken down into packets therefore better communication since no bandwidth is squandered on overhead. The most efficient packet uses Maximum transmission Unit, MTU.

Increase Router Performance

When the MTU is adjusted to a larger size then router performance is increased (Goertz & Kolbenschlag,2015). I would also disable the firewall in the routers to increase their speed however this will be done in consultation with Microsoft to enhance security features. I would also look at channel nodding to increase the bandwidth speed, where two or more ports will act as one.

Monitoring Information

The growth experienced at Catacomb means that information must be monitored to ensure employees give customers the right information across the 47 offices in the US. There are wide range of tools that can be used to monitor information in this case to achieve the resource management objectives. One such tool is satisfaction or perception survey which is conducted to assess the level of satisfaction on the services offered across the country. The other method I would employ at Catacomb is use of indicators and selection to provide a snapshot of the company at that particular time (Goertz & Kolbenschlag,2015).

Improving Service Delivery and Reducing Costs

Catacomb management want to improve service delivery to their clients and at the same time reduce the escalating costs in communication. In order to realize this balance of better services at a lower cost I propose they consider using digital ISDN line which is available at Home Highway. With a computer fitted with internet browser software it is possible to connect to the internet over a standard analogue phone. There are advantages in using this digital ISDN, one is that there is stable and fast connection across all the data centers (Goertz & Kolbenschlag,2015). Secondly it is possible to use two separate phone lines at a go this increases number of users and at the same time reduces costs. Making calls via the internet connection is both fast and cheap which is a big win for the organization.

Enhancing Communication Platform

Through the new ISDN catacomb will be able to create SharePoint and intranet sites which enables workers in the loop to communicate new information effectively. Instant messaging will also be possible through this new technology platform. This will aid managers and supervisors to see which workers are present and signed at their desks to be allocated duties.

Ensuring Data Security

In order to keep off hackers from the system there will be development of data encryption standard being the buttress of the ISDN security solution (Acampora, 2013). This includes intergrading security device in the ISDN architecture since confidential communication is paramount and must be safeguarded.
