A graduate of Penn State with BSN in 1991, Worked for University of Pittsburg Medical Center as an RN for six years. Worked initially on a medical floor, then to Emergency Department. Moved to Louisville, KY in 1997. Graduated with MSN from the University of Louisville in 2002 with certification in Clinical Nurse Specialist. Worked for UofL research department on various research projects from 2001-2008. Nurse educator and trainer for new hires in Emergency Departments. Currently chief of Emergency Department.

Discuss the value of best evidence as a driving force in the delivery of nursing care at your facility.

To help nursing staff find a balance between their clinical expertise and scientific evidence; while taking into account, their culture, ethnicities, their ideas, and beliefs about their health.

What safeguards and decision-making support tools are embedded in patient care technologies and information systems that support safe practice at your facility?

In the ED we utilize Computerized Physician Order/Entry and Clinical decision support which helps reduce medical errors. With the ability to utilize order sets/standing orders a nurse can use quick picks to get orders completed based on ‘simple’ symptoms. For example: when a patient complains of chest pain radiating down their left arm and has jaw pain for the past 3 hours, a nurse can then enter in the ED order sets menu “CHEST PAIN, ” and the computer software gives them complete orders if need be

Tell me about patient care technologies that have improved patient care at your facility.

The use of “HOLD” option when a patient is being held in the ER but is admitted to inpatient in the hospital. When we go on diversion in critical care areas or entire hospital diversion we hold patients in our ED.

We have a Safety Task Force that meets twice a day and we discuss staffing in critical areas and if needs arise a nurse floats to the shorted area to ensure safe patient to nurse ratios.

What groups of healthcare workers rely on you to collect high-quality information/data and how is that information utilized?

There is constant communication between myself and the other staff members. Information is passed through email and during shift huddles. Face to face communications is also used when need arises.

It is a challenge when a person has never physically worked in the ER since it is difficult to understand a day a nurse has and how easily stressors can happen.

Please give me an example of how the lack of interprofessional collaboration impacted your role.
