A textbook is a preparation manual for any field study that assists both students and teachers in organizing their studying. Textbooks are primarily used in educational settings such as campuses, colleges, and middle schools (Heyneman, Pg. 35). When selecting a suitable text, the most critical things to remember are language, syllabus coverage, and the appearance of quality materials. They are used in both print and mobile or web formats. Textbook adaptation at the task, unit, and syllabus levels are critical steps in course growth (Dragana, Pg. 1). A large number of textbooks are available for a fee in the United States. This discourse stands to persuade and explain to the United States Federal Government why they should make Colleges/Universities provide textbooks for free.
Learners use textbooks as a guide (Heyneman, Pg. 37). They clearly indicate and give an appropriate guide on a program’s syllabus and structure (Richards, Pg. 1). The institutions should provide textbooks at no charge because, with no textbooks, studies will not have a specific structure on how and what students should be taught in different curriculums. Students too won’t get the valid systematic study syllabus that they should have in each field. Textbooks systematically give the different topics to be learned in a certain subject with very clear explanations on each topic and are defended by various subtopics.
Education is standardized based on textbooks (Heyneman, Pg. 37). They ensure that students in different classes and schools receive the same information and thus providing a uniform education system (Richards, Pg. 1). The Education board also ensures that studies country-wide are uniform and equal because the outcome regardless of institutions will always be practiced in various fields but within the same region. Textbooks should not be charged because if textbooks did not exist then students in different parts of the country would be taught according to what their tutors understand most which would not be valid for practice and equal testing.
The quality of education is maintained by textbooks (Heyneman, Pg. 38). Well-developed tried, tested, and appropriately accredited textbooks are developed by the board in charge of quality assurance in education. They ensure that they have the required principles to provide the best education and thus maintaining a high quality of education (Richards, Pg. 1). The government should intervene and make textbooks free because, without textbooks, the quality of education would be low as students wouldn’t know what to refer to for more information when studying and even when doing assignments.
Students learn easily and fast using textbooks (Heyneman, Pg. 38). They bring about effective learning situations. Textbooks are usually referred to by students when they need more information on a topic. They provide visuals, activities, and readings (Dragana, Pg. 3). They basically act as a supplement to what is taught in class. Some students may not understand what is taught in class and thus refer to them to get a better understanding. Students should be allowed to access textbooks without incurring any cost because without textbooks learners would not have a source of information if they didn’t understand what was taught in class or even if they had to draw more information on a topic.
Textbooks are a resource to learning (Heyneman, Pg. 39). The majority of textbooks are accompanied by CDs, videos, workbooks, and cassettes provide a wide learning field related to various fields of study (Richards, Pg. 1). A huge percentage of textbooks are not only provided in print form but are also in electronic forms. They are mainly a rich and varied resource as it is used for research by both learners and teachers. From a different perception, students should access textbooks freely whenever they want to because being a learner is not all about taking in what you’re taught but also researching on what hasn’t been taught and various assignments and all these activities need resources (Wilson 162).
Reading can be at times be fun (Heyneman, Pg. 40). Not everyone has fun by participating in outdoor activities, some individuals may just decide to pick a textbook with a great topic that they’ve always wanted to read or just see a textbook that’s so interesting and decide to read it. Considering that most of the people are students and most of them would like to explore what happens all over the world, it is so unfair and unsupportive to sell textbooks to students.
Some students have a reading hobby (Heyneman, Pg. 40). They read during their free time. Sometimes you have so much free time and yet there is nothing much to do and the only solution is to pick any book and read it. One of the government’s aims is to support the young people in whatever they do to achieve their dreams. It’s time they come in to ask universities and colleges to stop giving students textbooks at a cost because some learners may lack what to do during their free time (Wilson 163).
An added advantage of reading through textbooks in studies is because they are written and designed by experts in the field. These experts definitely write all the available information, not forgetting the various updates. This will mean that the students will receive students will receive the most valuable information including the past and the most recent information (Jordan, Pg. 2). The government should understand that, if students could not be able to access this information as a result of financial issues then they may only be conversant with the old or no information.
They are not only important to students but also to tutors. Textbooks contribute widely towards the learning process for both students and teachers. Technology is taking the better part of the world but with no doubt, textbooks still play an important role in learning institutions. Good textbooks give the accurate and important information to learners as provided by the official government syllabus. Learning how to adapt textbooks is an important part of a learner’s professional knowledge (Richards, Pg. 6).
